Amplifying Monitor 70's worth it?

My shortlist consisted of a DSW1000 and a Pioneer Elite Receiver. I picked up a DSW3000 instead on thursday and now I'm starting to think about amplifying my Monitor 70's. What will I get out of it though? I've heard it doesn't make them louder. Will it give me cleaner sound?

What would be a decent amp? I noticed the pyle stuff on ebay is pretty inexpensive. Is it any good?

I wouldn't mind a matching setup but the pioneer amplifiers seem really expensive. What kind of power should I be shooting for with these speakers? 200 watts?

I guess I should point out that this is the receiver I'm hoping to pickup this fall:

+1, I sometimes run my M-70s off the AVR with an Adcom as well. It makes a BIG improvement in their overall sound. Better imaging, soundstage, cleaner more detailed highs and mids, more defined and more powerful bass. Highly recommended.

Most of the amps xcapri mentions above will doya. You need to hear what 'you' like first though?

There are lots of choices for amplification. I always recommend at least 200wpc. This will ensure that just about any speaker operates to its full operating potential.

Check out Emotiva XPA series, or Outlaw Audio for new amps. For used check out www.audiogon.com Brands to look at are Rotel, Sunfire, Adcom, Nad, Parasound, B & K.

The biggest improvements will be more headroom, greater clarity for vocals & instruments & improved bass.

You should check out the stellar deal in the flea market for an Arcam P1000 7 channel amp. I bi-amp my Monitor 70's with them and it makes them come alive. I have used 3 different amps on these 70's. A rotel rb 1070, an Anthem mca-5, and most recently my Arcam p1000. This amp is by far the most detailed and refined i have used. The nice thing is even after bi-amping there is still 3 channels left. The rotel and the anthem drove them very well too but were missing the clarity and detail that the Arcam brings.

    Welcome to CP Trenchant ;)

My first recommendation is to stay away from the Pyle crap. You haven't mentioned center channel but you are buying an AVR so I presume you will want to also use your set up for HT also so, I would suggest you think 3 channels amp in order to drive the 3 front channels (providing for a matched sound stage) thus relieving the AVR power for the surrounds and rears. In order to provide substantial gain, the amps must at least double the original power however, the amps would somewhat add to the AVR power to the surrounds not counting that you provide cleaner power anyway. Maybe check for a used emotiva 3 channels or better (nothing below that).

    Cheers!

Do you NEED an amp ? No,your pioneer will drive them fine. Will adding an amp make them sound better ? Most likely. To what degree ? Only you can answer that but most will confirm any speaker sounds better with seperate amplification.

I've got a CS2 center channel and monitor 30 rears. So I should probably start looking for a used amp.
