My miniature schnauzer has had a lot of seizures since Dec. of last year. We live in a rural community and our vet doesn't have a whole lot of experience with dog seizures. He has put him on phenobarbital, Thyriod medication, Bromide and Valium. I was wondering if there is anyone out there that has had experience with this and what advice they can give us. Please help!!!!!!!!

Thank you,
Chris

My girlfriend has a parrot who regularly experiences seizures. Two doses of phenobarb a day help a lot, but there's no way to avoid them completely.

Our little Keiko had neurological problems and was prone to seizures since birth. It is difficult, but one thing we found that helped was honey. When she started or we suspected one coming on, we got a teaspoon in her quick. We kept a jar and a small syringe specifically for this and it helped her through tremendously.

Thanks for that! Im going to try that next time.

Chris I had a pooch that suffered from seizures and the Vet gave me the above minus the Thyriod med to help him. I found that 10 mg Valium or 1 mg of Xanax three to four times a day worked the best. The thing is to dispense it thoughout the day to prophylactically keep the seizures from happening rather than give it to him when the seizures occur.

I had a little dog that suffered seizures among other ailments, I feel for you and your pet! Phenobarb levels and liver function need to be monitored carefully. There is some good info at the site linked below but some of it I'm not too sure of, so take it with a grain of salt.:)

Well just the Phenobarb and Valium alone should take care of the seizures unless there is something else going on with that poor puppy.

My son called me yesterday sounding very sad and downhearted. They had to put their dog to sleep. We were dicussing how it would be a lot easier to wake up one morning and find your pet passed rather than to have to make that awful decision to let him live or die and the worse part IMHO along with the decision is holding the beloved pet while they administer the death med no matter how painless.

Sorry, I derailed there I'm just really, really, feeling my son's pain and needed to share it.

I hope your little guy gets some relief from those awful seizures.

My first Golden Retreiver started having epileptic seizures at 4 years of age. He was on Phenobarb until I had to put him down at 12. Over the years his dosage increased and during one particularly bad time, I used all of the available Phenobarb in my city. He made it through that episode, but was always prone to seizures. Hold you dog and try to calm it during the episodes, but be careful, as I was bitten accidentally once.

Hope your dog does not continue with them, but know that they can live a long time even having them periodically.

I would like to thank everyone for their response on this matter. Unfortunately we were too late to do anything. He had 17 seizures in a 72 hour time period. His last one was at 7:30 yesterday morning. I called the vet right away and he said to bring him in. Frankie suffered a lot of brain damage throughout the weekend. I could tell that his personality really change between Sunday afternoon and Monday morning. He did nothing but pace the house and evening started urinating in the house which he hadn't done since he was 6 months old. When he would finally lay down to sleep, it wouldn't be but about a half an hour before he would go into another seizure. He didn't even recognize me after the last one. The vet asked what we wanted to do. He explained the they could refer him to have a brain scan done and if surgery needed to be done, the chances are not great with him surviving the surgery. He told us the he has been to numerous seminars relating to seizures and neurological since he started treating Frankie back in December and has learned quite a lot about the situation. So, we had a very very hard decision to make. We had him put to sleep. We figured that his quality of life was gone. He definitely wasn't himself. He will be truly missed...

    RIP Frankie 06/07/10

damn... talk about bad coincidences. I read this thread last week, and then on Friday night, my 4 year old Pomeranian had 3 small seizures in 30 minutes. Never had any before. Had to spend the night at the emergency animal hospital. She's all drugged up on phenobarbitol now, and still has slight twitching occasionally. This sucks. At least our regular vet seems pretty knowledgeable on canine epilepsy. Have to run more tests, and get her on something less toxic than the phenobarb.

I'm really really sorry for your loss. Me and my wife have been going nuts this weekend worrying about our "kid".

Wow, I'm so sorry to hear that. Hopefully they'll be able to get them under control quickly.
