I know there are far fewer videophiles here than audiophiles... Just wondering if anyone has heard or seen this player yet? I just stumbled on it today. Don't even know how long it's been out...

LOL....
It's been out a while, and it has been discussed in other threads at length, you'll just need to get your search on and dig it up, but it IS on here somewhere. -

We discussed the 83 in overwhelming detail. The 80 not at all, from what I can find.

It was discussed, I remember it. I know there's at least one thread, probably more. If I had to guess I'd say the thread was probably create by Danny Tse, so start there.

Oppo BDP-80 discontinued due to poor salesAccording to several well-placed sources, the latest entry in Oppo's Blu-ray player lineup, model BDP-80, is already being discontinued, allegedly because of poor sales. The brand's other, older players, models BDP-83 and BDP-83 Special Edition, will continue to be sold. No new models have been announced yet.
After the first rumors about this development, Blu-ray.com contacted Oppo Digital for comment in August, and the company replied then: "Since we have made no product announcements, we will not be discussing what players may or may not be discontinued." -
Looks to be truth. Oppo's home page no longer has the BDP-80 listed & the BDP-80 page under products lists it as sold out.

that sucks - even I was going to get one of these eventually (though mostly for SACD / dvd-audio).Dali Optikon 1Mk2
NAD D3020 V2
Schiit Bifrost 2/64
..the rest are headphone setups. -
And there's the problem. I think most who are interested in the Oppo line for audio reasons spung for the 83 or 83SE. And for those who had no interest in the audio capabilities saw the 80 as being overpriced compared to the competition.
-
True. Well, there seem to be dvd players that offer similar functionality (HK, Cambridge for instance) that are less exp than even the 80. Seem to offer dvd-a, sacd, (and presumably HDCD).
aahh well.Dali Optikon 1Mk2
