Yep, an all time great. It really is time for him to call it a career.

Yeah Jr. was about as good as they come. If not for the constant injuries while with the Reds he might have become the all time home run leader. He played centerfield as good as anyone before or after him. His career might be even more remarkable considering he played in the roid era and IF he was clean (and who knows if he was) then he lapped the field of his contemporaries!!!!!!!!!

I think he stayed on a year or two too long but he's one of my favorites. I have cards from every year he played including his rookie year. I don't know who I admired more, Griffey Jr or Ripken Jr.

I always like Jr. I thought that he was going to be the greatest home run hitter ever. He had the sweetest swing I have ever seen.

He was going to be the greatest HR hitter, all w/o steroids, but then he got injured and just coudn't stay healthy. I think that's how you can tell he didn't use.. while Mcguire, Clemmens and Bonds were heating up in their mid 30's since Steroids also help with injury recovery Griffey was breaking down.

funny thing is his injuries started by hitting the wall. He hit the outfield wall and hurt his wrist. Then things went down hill with leg injuries.

Just beat up. He's been playing for 22 years and in '02, '03 and '04 he had season ending injuries related to tears and and such in his calf muscles and a hamstring tear. He needed surgery to fix them. He also had a shoulder problem early in his career IIRC.

But his hamstring surgery was "experimental" at the time and I remember the doctor naming the procedure after him. He called it "The Junior Operation" I think. They like screwed his hamstring back to his bone so it would stop tearing away. He was walking around on crutches for weeks with his leg immobilized in a 90 degree angle until it healed. It apparently worked because he had a decent year in 2005 when he came back.

He beat Mantle's home run record in '06 with his 537th home run. He broke his wrist in the 06 off-season. I remember that because in '07, his play in the outfield suffered a bit and they moved him from center to right field. He was traded back to Seattle later that year and then in 08 he was sent to the White Soxs after passing Jackie Robinson for 16th spot on the all-time RBI list.

He hit free agency in 09 and went back to Seattle again and he retired. He's 5th on the all-time home run list last I checked.

I don't think he was traded to Seattle before going to Chicago. But I'm just splitting hairs. Probably one of the classiest guys in all of baseball. The sweetest swing and such a pure, unadulterated love of the game. Wish he had gotten a ring.

    He will be missed.
I never had it like this where I grew up. But I send my kids here because the fact is you go to one of the best schools in the country: Rushmore. Now, for some of you it doesn't matter. You were born rich and you're going to stay rich. But here's my advice to the rest of you: Take dead aim on the rich boys. Get them in the crosshairs and take them down. Just remember, they can buy anything but they can't buy backbone. Don't let them forget it. Thank you.Herman Blume - Rushmore

I was shocked when I heard this. I guess it hasn't gotten much press after what happened last night in the motor city. Jr. was the reason I got into baseball. I just wise I would have gotten his autograph.
