I have never traded anything online but wonder to myself how one goes about this

I have lots of electronics laying around in boxes that I dont want to sell because the wife would indeed make plans to spend it so then......

How do I trade and swap online wilst protecting myself from fraudsters

Try swinging. You'll know quickly whether having a strangers paws all over your stuff is for you or not. :)

I would post it on craigslist as "wanting to trade".

That is the only time I would post there. If I were a bad type of person I'd be going over that site night and day.

    Sold:
    Vandersteens 1C $350
    KEF Q80 $150
    Acoustic Research Subwoofer $65
    KEF 102/2 $150

    Bought:
    KEF 104/2 $300
    Mark Levinson $800

All good deals. Maybe our local loonies are not as loony as your local loonies? ;)

Plus you do know that all emails that say "are they still available?" are spam emails are trying to harvest your address when you reply and say "Yes, they are..."

All local loonies are loony, I just don't invite them to my house unless they post here. And even then they are often never seen again. :p

I used to do it a lot. I'd ask them for thier home phone number, I bought a tracfone so they didn't have my real number I would call them at a random time and see if it really was them. I also made sure that their address didn;t look fake.

I give them my cell number (unlisted) or ask for theirs. I always start right into a dialog and ask them about what they would be using them with, what other gear they've tried, and if they have listened to the gear I'm selling them before. Basically try and get a feeling for if the fella is on the level.

I've had two instances where I cut the sales short.
First was some jerk calling and immediately says "tell me about them, why I should buy them?" I politely told him that I wasn't a flea market and that they weren't meant for him.
Second guy was nice and we chatted for awhile. When he told me he would be using them with Bose speakers, I hung up and called the police.

Actually, Bose speakers really aren't that bad. But their massive marketing as upscale audio/video is just annoying. They never post specs on their equipment such as speaker sensitivity and impedance, which annoys quite a few folks and other manufacturers of quality stuff.

Actually the older versions of the Bose Acoustimass (500?) were actually not that bad....

I traded a very expensive set of wheels and tires last year. He had the listing posted so he had my information and I had his. He shipped me his wheels and the day they arrived, I used his boxes to ship mine to him. Worked out but he had to rock stock wheels for 6 days.

Yeah, I mean it's the same thing as buying, just without paying money.
I mean really, if you are that concerned as him if he'd be willing to like give you a monetary lean....or what not....be like if you are honest you will give me like 100 which is half of what my xxxx is worth. When the deal goes through I'll send it back.

Nothing wrong at all with trading to people on Craigslist. I have traded/sold/bought many guitars/amps and rack gear over the years. Thing is, don't invite them over to the house. I know that may be a little harder to do with stereo equipment not being able to audition it first though. I always meet them in a public place only! And I usually have my .40 on me as well just in case.

I got several component pieces laying around as well I need to sell or trade off. I'd offer to ship first for trades here on the forum.

A sure way for me to weed the bums out is to ask them to meet at my work. The local Sheriff's Department. I've had a few back out on me when I tell them that. lol

I have a story about a meth guy. When I was doing an internship at my local PD, we got a call about a guy who was jacked up on meth. He was running in traffic telling people to hit him. He caused 3 accidents and never got a scratch. We get there and hes all like "hit me hit" and stuff like that, well it took 4 of our heftiest officers to take him down, and he kept getting back up. Mind you he was a 6'4" twig.
Make a long story short, he kept staring at me with this grin...it was creepy. They finally tazered him because there was nothing else he could do, and he kept on fighting i was like "WHAT!!!????"
They had to bring out the animal tazer to get him down. I was like...damn meth is crazy stuff.
I mean for him to beat up for like an hour, tazed ones, then tazed again before he was down...
No way...I'm never doing that stuff.

Aside from that, I always carry a knife, or some sort of back up person with me. Just in case.
