I was told by a friend that it's possible to hook up a 12inch car sub that I have laying around collecting dust to the HT i'm building which will consist of the parts in my sig. i'm not sure if that would be a good idea...? I'm a little worried that the sub might cause my received to overheat. Any one try this before? Any thoughts?

Uhhhh...don't hook a sub up to the receiver unless it has a specific, speaker level, sub output. If it's just an RCA jack or optical port, you'll need to get an amplifier.
Can you give me more info on the sub? Brand? Model? Model number would be good too.
If you can get me that info, I can help you out much better. You'll probably need an enclosure for the sub as well if you don't have one already but that's an easy fix. If you do have an enclosure, what kind is it? Sealed? Ported? Band-pass? Do you know what the volume of the enclosure is if you have one?
And using a car sub in a home theater is fine. I used one for the longest time with great success! For home theater I like the heavy duty automotive subs better because they can handle higher power levels which help with generating that big impact sound that everybody wants in the HT.Expert Moron Extraordinaire

Appreciate the reply! I will have to gather all that info when I get home.
what I know now is:
the box that the 12inch sub sits in is just some heavy, what looks like a perfect square car subwoofer box. It had a glass face, right in front of the sub, but it's no longer there.
The sub is a rockford fostgate punch brand... that's all I know for now.
My receiver (ONKYO TX-SR608) has a separate output for a sub, what looks somewhat like a big microphone jack.
I just got the receiver with the rest of whats in my sig last night. I have yet to really read through the manuals and figure out what's what. I'm new to HT so i really do have a lot to learn.Living Room 7.1 HT Rig:

Hmmmm...RF Punch, huh? This might be interesting! Definitly get the info on it. I can probably find the specs if I have the model number and what impedance it is. All that should be on the magnet sticker.
The sub box. If it had a plexiglas panel, it was probably a bandpass at one point. If it's missing the plexiglas panel then that box is not going to be very good for what you want to use it for. Are you opposed to doing a little construction work?
Also, that "big microphone jack" is likely a signal lead only for the sub. You won't be able to power the sub off of that so you'll need an amplifier for the sub too. Again, not a big problem at all.
After looking at the manual for the receiver online, you only have subwoofer pre-outs so you'll need an amp for the sub.
Get me the info on the sub and we'll go from there.Expert Moron Extraordinaire
