I noticed that crutchfield is out of stock on every polk audio product just about. Are they getting ready for a major upgrade to the line or is it production problems? Seems like they maybe clearing out inventory for some new products. Or it could be that crutchfield is not going to carry there line anymore? I noticed that onlinecarstereo is a authorized dealer now.

They stopped production of the SR's a while ago. Sr6500's i've only been able to find on e bay. The 5250's still seem to be in stock in most stores. But supplies are low. Looks like they're clearing out the inventory. There still seems to be quite a few subs left though as i got 2 directly from Polk very recently.

We can only speculate as to the future of the SR line or it's replacement. No official word yet nor hints.

The SR line is gone. The SR6500's have been long gone for a while. They have just a few SR5250's left and once theyre gone, theyre gone.

The MM line is now the flagship of the Polk Audio car audio line.

Its sad to see the MM line be the "flagship" polk car speakers. I guess its hard to sell 800 car speakers right now.

Nothing wrong with the MM line especially for the money. Id run their stuff in competition. Theyre $300 components and Id put them up against any other $300 components out there.

If they are phasing the SR line out. Why does onlinecarstereo have the whole SR line in stock? They have every polk audio product they make in stock right now. But yet crutchfield is even out of stock of the MM line.

They don't have them all in stock. Try calling them. Been there. Done that.

Maybe DEI, is just shutting down polks loss making products. Or maybe they figure they've got car audio covered with orion. Probably the former. Which is sad, cause if the sr's were losing money, it certainly wasn't a product issue. The market is bad for everyone. I don't see other speaker brands pulling the plug on the top end products. Someone screwed up for sure if the sr's were still losing money 5-6 years after launch.

With the sr's gone, the MM's are the flagship, by pure definition of the word. The fact that polks flagship cannot stand up to the flagships of the other brands, is the reason Mac's bawling......

Because Crutchfield gets their stock from Polk where joints like Onlinecarstereo get theirs out of some guys trunk in some alley. Refurbs, repaired, remanufactured and outright knock offs.

So which other speaker comes closest to the sr sound?

The MM's are close. They use the same technology that went into the SR's. They have a natural sound and are pretty detailed. I'd run them, no problem. The tweeter might not be as refined as the SR's but they are better of axis and easier to install.

Don't misunderestimate them. Just because they dont cost $900 don't mean they cant kick ****.

Ok, so now you want me to replace the sr mids with a pair of mm mids and run them with the sr tweets :)

As you see it, how much of the price diff between the MM and the SR's is on account of the mid and how much on the tweet? Lets say MM=$300 and SR=$900.

I dunno. I'd guess a big chunk of the SR price tag comes from that awesome crossover. The mids would probably run $100 each if they were on Madisound and the tweeters identical to the SRs are around $35 each.

If your SRs are fried, it might not be a bad idea to go with the MMs. Might be fun to start tuning fresh. ;)

In my recent install I had to replace a set of polk momo's that wouldnt fit, MM was the only line I could put my hands on at the time.
They are handling 125 watts and do a outstanding job. They also have a tiny mounting depth. The little magnet on the back of them had me worried until I gave them some juice and they sprang to life. I listen to alot of metal, only issue I have sofar is guitar on certain tracks blows vocals out of the water. This could be the crossover difference between the MM and SR line. Fast attack times on midbass is spot on. Matched with a set of MOMO series2 componets front stage is nice and thick. I like many other people couldnt afford to spend 800$ on a set of 6.5" componets, but the sound that polk brings to the table at the 300$ price range for me is unbeatible!

Original post mentioned Crutchfiled is all out of stock of Polk car speakers.
Well, yes and no. Only SRs and MM6500 is out of stock but if u look on "expected delivery date" u can see that SRs are soon to be back in stock:

So in reality only MM6500 is out of stock. That is if SRs do arrive 6/9/10 offcourse.

Skip Polk and go Focal. I've competed with them and love them!! I have not found anything better. If you can get a hold of the older 5W 5 1/4 in Subs!!! Yes Subs!! They will do wonders for your midbass and midrange. The newer ones are even better but more money.

Did your SR's stop working? I have 2 pairs of the 6500's and one of them was starting to crackle, then a few weeks ago I got home, started the car up that was parked at the airport, and all 4 sound like they're suffering......no idea what could have happened, but I have to figure out what to do with either a mid or tweet broken in each corner.......

Nothing wrong with Focal really, theyre just really bright. Theyve got good midbass. I prefer the more natural Polk sound myself though.

One of my mids plays about 15db lower than the other mid. The other 3 drivers are fine. Seems like a vc issue on this mid.

In your case, try and play one driver at a time to see which ones are ok and which aren't. If all 4 are cracking up then you prob fed them too much power. It could also be an amp issue. You will have to do some elimination.
