OK, so the Onkyo DS-777 is dead...

Or so it would seem. I posted a few weeks back and got some great advice on in-ceiling surrounds. Ended up taking said advice and got the TC80i's. Took a while to get here, but the price was fantastic.

This weekend I was setting up everything in the new house and apparently have a problem getting a subwoofer signal from my receiver. I've tried several different cables and different speakers (my fronts have subs in them too). No luck.

So two questions:

1. Any other Onkyo owners have any suggestions on what to try? Odd that it would only affect the sub output - all others are working great.

2. If it is in fact dead, do you have any good resources for receiver shopping? I'm not sure if I would want a new top of the line receiver (like this one was 12 years ago...) or just something to get me by for another 4-5 years when my old rear-projection tv dies.

Can you be a tad more specific. What subwoofer do you have ? What cable are you connecting where ?

Tony1 - Of course. I have a PSW450 sub. I also have RT1000s with the powered subs built in. I am connecting from the sub out RCA port on the back of my receiver directly to the 450. I would generally split this to feed the RT1000s, but am taking those out of the equation now for troubleshooting purposes.

Tony2 - I've run through all of the menus for the receiver. I have excellent signal/level to the 5 mains, just nothing at all to the sub. I am not aware of a sub on/off swtich either physically on the receiver or in the menu. I also do not believe this receiver has different settings for small/large speakers - could be wrong on that one though.

If this is user error, all the better! I would like to try to keep this receiver running for a few more years before upgrading.

Does the subs work in the RT1000's if connected to the sub output RCA of AVR?

Had one of these and if I recall correctly the settings are a little tricky. There is a sub on/off I'm pretty sure. Keep digging and try to reset the microprocessor as well.

There has to be something in the setup menu to turn sub on or off. Check again.

Buzzed the manual,it's right there in initial settings at the top.

Joe - No, the subs on the RT1000s are not receiving a signal either. Tried a few different cables too just to rule that out.

Conrad/Tony - Great advice. I was able to find the speaker set up by disabling a THX setting and clicking enter (no indication that particular screen was hiding back there). Found sub yes/no and speakers large/small. Sub was set to yes. Still no signal.

I would love to try a reset. I was not able to locate instructions to do so. I tried the steps for some other Onkyo models (hold down video 1 button and press standby to clear, no luck. I tried this will all of the input buttons). I'll fire off an email to Onkyo tonight to ask. Any ideas on that step? Would be great if this were just a config or firmware error...

On the off chance that this is interesting to anyone other than me, I received the reset instructions from Onkyo on this receiver. Will try as soon as I get home.

"The reset procedure is as follows: To do the reset you need to turn the receiver on then on the front panel of the receiver press and hold the "VIDEO-1" button while doing that press the "SPEAKER-A" button. You will see the word "Clear" in the display screen and the receiver will go into standby mode. PLEASE UNDERSTAND THAT YOU WILL LOOSE ALL YOUR AUDIO & VIDEO ASSIGNMENTS ON THE RECEIVER PLUS YOU WILL LOOSE ALL YOUR SPEAKER CONFIGURATIONS, SPEAKER DISTANCE AND ALL LEVEL CALIBRATION SETTINGS. YOU WILL ALSO LOOSE ANY PROGRAMMED RADIO STATIONS IN MEMORY. Once the receiver goes into standby mode turn it back on and go thru the setup menu for all custom settings."
