I am looking for some new 12AU7 (or equivalent) tubes for my CD player. I was looking to get some Amperex 1950's D-getter 12AU7's, but someone suggested I listen to some 1950's RCA 3 mica 5814A tubes. Can some of you that have heard these tubes describe the sounds they produce? I have never heard this tube, but am looking to put these in place of some RCA clear tops and Brimar 13D5 tubes. Thanks for everyones' help.

"I'm yet to hear a Polk speaker that merits more than a sentence and 60 seconds discussion." :\
My response is: If you need 60 seconds to respond in one sentence, you probably should't be evaluating Polk speakers.....

Come on, no one has heard these tubes? George Daniels? Just need an explanation of the sounds. Soundstage, warmth, etc.

Greg, with tubes you just have to take the plunge and find out for yourself. Just becuase someone has heard these before doesn't mean they will sound the same in your gear. I have tried so many tubes and finally found some favorites.

To give you an example I know 2 other people who have the same pre I have and we all 3 like different tubes and I could describe what I was hearing to the others and they didn;t necessarily hear the same things.

Just start buying up some different types; there are ALL kinds of great deals on ebay if you pay attention. I've bought $150/pr tubes for $30 and $40 when I am really, really looking for a good deal.

Tubes are very subjective and very dependent on gear they are used in. Some can give a general idea of a good tube, but there's no way to say what it will sound like in your gear, especially if you are running other tubes with it.

I understand Brock. I was hoping to get a general idea of the soundstage width/depth and tonal qualities at least. I most likely will try them, but also want to try some Amperex 7316 tubes as I love the Amperex soundstage, although not completely warm, but they are pretty smooth and not grainy. I am just wondering which to get first, as I cannot afford both right now.
