From reading a lot on the forum, I am sure you will get a few votes for Denon. I Really like Marantz too, but I haven't heard Polk/Marantz together. Yamaha makes some great stuff, and I really enjoy the sound- however with the Rt line I found it a bit bright for myself- My dad has a Yamaha and Polk setup for his bedroom and loves it. Really to each his own. What models are you considering, and what speakers will you be powering?

Of the choices listed, I'd say Denon or Marantz. Personally, I don't like the sound of the Yamaha w/RTi's.

Not on your list is Rotel which would be my first choice over all three.

    Dthomps,

I currently have a pair of RTi70's. I am planning on buying a CSi40 and a pair of RTi38's. Receiver wise concerning Denon, I'm looking at the AVR-1803. For Marantz, I am looking at the SR5300. And for the Yamaha, I am looking at the RX-V1300. I believe all three are in the same price range.

    Well those are my choices.

    What do you think?

Any of the above + a few more. Arcam, Nad, AMC, Outlaw, etc etc etc.

Try to demo what can locally. If you have some bookshelf RTi, take them with you to your local shop, and demo them with the gear they have.

    Hey glemay-
You are on your way to a grat HT setup. My dad has a very similar system, the one I was referring to above is an rx-v995, (Yamaha) RT600i's, a Cs400i, and a pair of Rt35i's in the rear. I really do like it, but like I said it is a tad bright for my taste. The new Rti line may have solved this problem with the tweeter, from what I read it is "smoother" than the older tri-lam. I must admit that I am a bit biased though, I bought Denon (avr-3801) for myself and I would highly recommend Denon with Polk :D
I do also like that model Marantz though, and I have seen them for pretty good prices. Either way you can't really lose, they would both make awesome home theaters.

    Russ,

I don't know if you're having fun or what, but I am serious. Sony ES is hand built, limited production, very high quality gear. They actually have an astounding amount of awards, patents and accolades. The people who design and work on the ES line have to have worked for Sony for 20 years before they are even considered for the position. They even back it up with one of the best warranties in the business, 5years. Great gear, PERIOD!!!

Because you have RTi70 towers, my choice would be a more powerful receiver such as the Denon 2803 ($799), Denon 3803 ($1199), or go separates with a Rotel or Outlaw. I love my 3803 but if I could do it again, now that I'm more educated on HT equipment, I would go with a Rotel.
    My 7.1 setup consists of:
    Denon 3803
    Panasonic DVD
    RTi70s front
    CSi40 front center
    RTi28s side surround
    FXi30s back surround
PSW202 Subwoofer - Hey, it's my first sub!
    RCA 46" 4:3 RPTV

The newer models of the 1066 do support the 200 MHz bandwidth for HDTV. Chances are if/when you buy your 1066, just specify that you want the upgrade done (should be free and at no charge if the unit is and older stock model). With the newer models, you should also get the free firmware upgrade cable and the newer remote, the RR-1050. Don't get screwed.

What kind of money are you thinking? What kind of features are you looking for? How big is your room, etc? I could suggest McIntosh to B&K, or a vintage Sansui.

Also not all receivers from a give manufacturer sound alike (to me atleast). This is how they justify the price of their more expensive models after all.

Take a look at the Denon AVR-4802. Prices have really dropped in the last couple of months. I assume Denon is planning on a new model to replace this one, but I will say I love my 4802 paired with my RT2000i's. I demoed this one after reading Mantis's recommendations on Denon and Polk RT's.

The combo really sounds crisp and detailed. The speakers really image, and this receiver has lots of power and hookups.

    Just my two cents!

I think the following is the clearest I can describe Reciever/Speaker mating:

The reciever is like a mattress, some like a firm mattress (brighter amp) some like a softer mattress (neutral amp) and so on. Your speakers can be seen as your back...your back my feel better on a soft or on a firm mattress, only you can decide. Its not that any one is better than the other, its just that we each have our own opinions about what is good to us.

Get what sounds good to you. I have a Yamaha and RTxxi's myself, and love the sound.

How's the GF/Wife/significant other fit in here? Are they like the same ole' CD's you keep listening to over and over again? If I change the mattress out does it feel better? Or is it that if I pump it up too hard, too fast I might blow out my speaker :D:p

People who use air mattress' (mass market receivers) have bad backs (speakers)... so that variable can be ruled out...heh

Another classic thread... start off comparing Denon vs. Marantz and end up with Simmons vs. BeautyRest...

    glemay,
Couple nuggets here so far for you, starting with urgings from some to go with higher current models.

Since your RTi's aren't exactly portable, narrow your search at the local dealer that carries RTi's. If they see you as a serious buyer, they'll swap units around for you. Then see if you can demo the top one at home alongside a Rotel, or other suggested high current model, that may not be available where the RTi's are available.

Again, if you're serious, the dealers will arrange loaners for you, with the appropriate deposit of course.

    Frank,
    Loved the rodeo comment... :D
    More later,
