I have 4 kicker 18" subs I got real cheap for my HT. Never hooked up more than 2 at a time because it hurt too bad! Two of them in a down firing position almost broke my knees on a bass heavy passage. Seriously!

I'm still trying to figure out how the spacing of the speakers has anything to do with the highs.....

As I said, I only tried two at the same time. Each 18" driver is in a sealed box which is about a 22" cube made of 1.5" MDF and braced like a SOB. Extremely solid. The area in the box sets the Q (damn, I forget what this parameter is really called) to 0.75 which keeps the cone very well controlled but rolls off quicker than the standard 0.72 (larger box) used for HT subs or 0.67 or so (even larger box) often used for HS subs. Because equalization is necessary to keep freq response flat it came with an Audio Control bass equalizer.

I powered it with a Carver PT-1250 which outputs 625 watts per channel into 8 ohms or about 805 watts per channel into 4 ohms, which these speakers are. They can easily handle all the output from this monster amp!

It sounded, well, loud and powerful. Think professional sound system in an arena type loud. Very scary. When the cones moved a tenth of an inch the windows started to worry me. At low levels it sounds great but seems to pressurize the house when turned up. Kinda like those competiton bass soundoffs for cars but in a house.

The guy who designed the system was a maniac. I figure at some point I'll build them into my basement HT. Should provide some real nice explosions!:D

PS: I don't have a basement HT yet. Still just a dream and a lot of hard work ahead...

I looked at the theater room in question again. No wonder he has the speakers so close together. It looks like if he put them closer to the side walls that everything would reflect off of them given his seating position. (because of the shape of the room).

I see a couple of compromises here. He could line the left and right walls next to the screen with sound absorbant material or diffusers and move the speakers much closer to the corners. Given the shape here he really cannot toe them in any. Another alternative would be to move the speakers forward and wider apart. Still some side dressing would be reasonable. Too bad that damn wall has to be sticking out next to the screen. If that were not there it would be nice and easy. Personally I would probably be looking to see if turning the system around in the room made any sense.

    I like the guitars.

I tried last night the moving them out to the side's, It sounded no better or worse. The room is L shaped the way it is now is preety much the only way it could go. The other side of the room has a wood burning stove and pattio doors leading out side. The front the way it is now was the only way to set it up for a great viewing area being that's the longest part of the room front to back. The walls were takin down and sound proffed because I have kids and a wife and let's just say no one wants to here Jimi Hendrix late at night playing all through the house. And for the Kicker subwoofer, I am telling you guys be it right or not it kick's **** and sounds great and in the studio as a studio guitar palyer we have done the same thing many of times you would not belive how many cd's you might own were there was a car sub somewhere in the recording.

440 views in two days, when I saw that I did a huge "HOLY ****". I feel special, thanks guys......

Seriously, with that screen, is it possible to turn it sideways, maybe, so it's at a 45 degree angle to the corner? That way you could put the speakers where there would be little or no reflection from nearby walls. You sub could still be in the corner, so you wouldn't loose any bass. You also might open up some secondary veiwing positions in parts of the room that were blocked by that protrusion.

BTW, how is that sub powered? If you're just running it off the "B" terminals of your receiver then I pray to the Holy Father that you crossed it over SOMEWHERE, you don't want symbols coming from the sub.

Just trying to help, man. Don't take it too personally, but don't call other peoples systems "junk". That goes to a more personal level than "these are some things that might be robbing your system of it's potential..."

I think the way it is setup is the way it is staying is what our man Red was saying. That screen is painted on to the wall.

Good luck with your system Redhouse.

It's powered, 300 watts from a self built face plate amp with a crossover. I found a speciality audio store in the south side of Chicago deals with mostly car audio stuff and big time sub's for home theater, he built me the amp for this subwoofer. Also thanks for the post's it seems like there's alot of cool people on this site.

What would you call that, house gain?

    Hifi Glossary

House Gain - Low frequency boost that occurs when your subs are such stupidly effin huge monstrosities they fill your house.

Gain, house gain, freakin gain, pure pain...

What can I say, the whole system minus amps was $275. Had to try it. Did I call the designer a maniac? What is 10 steps above that? BTW, one driver retailed for $475. How about brain gain? Like I say, I'm looking forward to some good explosions. The biggest problem will be to keep the neighbors from reporting a terrorist attack after the first movie...
