Amp... definately get an amp. Something with 200 wpc or better will work nicely.

Whats the budget ? Keep in mind you'll need a receiver with pre-outs and a couple cables to hook it up.
    HT SYSTEM-
    Sony 850c 4k
    Pioneer elite vhx 21
    Sony 4k BRP
    SVS SB-2000
    Polk Sig. 20's
    Polk FX500 surrounds

    Cables-
    Acoustic zen Satori speaker cables
    Acoustic zen Matrix 2 IC's
    Wireworld eclipse 7 ic's
    Audio metallurgy ga-o digital cable

    Kitchen

    Sonos zp90
    Grant Fidelity tube dac
    B&k 1420
    lsi 9's

Welcome to Club Polk. The Pioneer VSX-1020 doesn't have preamp outputs for an external amp.
The last of that series that did was the VSX-1018.

Using the internal amps with the VSX-1020, you can only run the LSi's at low to moderate volumes.
The receiver will shut down on overload at higher volumes. The LSi's also won't sound anywhere close to their best.

Sorry to bring you the bad news, but I would suggest that you return or sell the VSX-1020 and get the VSX-1120 which does have preamp outputs, so that you can add an external amp.

    +1 to all of that.

The LSi's really need an amp to sound their best. Most AVR's, with a few exceptions, aren't capable of efficiently driving LSi's, due to the LSi's being 4 ohms nominal.

First, you're going to need to upgrade your receiver to a model with preamp outputs. These are necessary for connecting an external amp.

What kind of price range are you thinking for an amp?

Some brands to look into are Adcom, Parasound, Rotel and B&K.
    The nirvana inducer-
    APC H10 Power Conditioner
    Marantz UD5005 universal player
    Parasound Halo P5 preamp
    Parasound HCA-1200II power amp
    PolkAudio LSi9's/PolkAudio SDA 2A's/PolkAudio Monitor 7A's
    Audioquest Speaker Cables and IC's
