Since Microsoft is no longer supporting Windows XP, I've been considering upgrading to Windows 7, but i'd recently heard ubuntu's latest offering was quite good so I decided to dust off an old HP laptop that had XP pro on it that was so bogged down with Windows updates and BS and install ubuntu on it to see what would happen.
All I can say is WOW!. Kudos to Linux for this gem. Its very light on the system and easy to use. Its like I have a new laptop and I didn't have to spend a penny to get it. I find myself using it more than a newer laptop still running XP. I am going to take all the money I saved from the Microsoft upgrade and buy some music.
Although Windows 7 is a great product, its not free, so anybody with an aging laptop that is gagging on the mess that is XP, check it out.

Ubuntu is great. I have been running it for 5 years now. It is all I use. If you have a decent graphics card turn on compiz. I also like using AWN for a dock. Welcome to a whole new world. There are tons of things to do, especially if you like tweaking things. It is good for the everyday things as well.Front - RTiA5's

The hardcore Linux guys at work told me that ubuntu is for wussies. I've run it before and really liked it.
But honestly with XP and now Windows 7, I've always found windows to be secure enough for my needs, easy enough to run on decent hardware, and much easier to configure and get what I want out of it. -

Agreed. Windows 7 is great. However, there are no more upgrades, updates being offered for XP. XP is dead. My point was if you don't want to send Bill Gates and friends any more money for older machines, ubuntu works great on modest, older laptops. If you are not a hard core Linux user, then you'll never feel like a wussie.
I know some guys who consider everyone except themselves wussies on anything computer related. These guys are running data centers for multi national companies. I'll never breath that kind of geek air, and honestly don't want to.
The ubuntu install was easy and fun, and now I have an extra laptop for whatever that was useless using XP!"The good thing about science is that it's true whether or not you believe in it." Neil deGrasse Tyson.
