I had the opportunity to watch some spectacular flying today. We went out in the harbor at Annapolis on a 32' Sea Ray for an unobstructed view of the action. Pics are from cell phone, but not too bad.

In the beginning, all knowledge was new!

That's the sound of freedom baby!
Here in San Diego, the Blue Angels fly a show at Miramar MCAS - some of their fly byes go East to West along the canyon I face on and the sound is part of the fun - far away rumble getting closer, building in volume until it is like thunder rolling by!

I'm jealous, Mike! We saw the Thunderbirds warming up over OC about a year ago. Amazing sight. Sounds like a great day. The weather was beautiful!

Slightly off topic; I was waiting at the end of the runway (by the bay) in my truck at Patuxent River Naval Station a few weeks ago, and the new Joint Strike Fighter/F35 was lined up to take off (can't cross the active when planes are landing/taking off. They spooled the engine up, and with WINDOWS UP in my truck, it was possibly the LOUDEST SOUND I've ever heard in my life. The entire vehicle was shaking violently. It was an audio/tactile/visual EVENT.
With 20 years USAF, I'm certainly no virgin to jet engines & LOUD, but this was OMFG loud~TNRabbit

My thoughts exactly. Can you imagine being some bad actor, somewhere on the globe, and hearing these guys coming for you? -

When the Angels started their Delta formation, climbing, slow 360 roll, they were about 100 yards off our starboard bow and 200 FEET above the water. The sound of the six Hornet engines aimed straight at us was the most dB's I've ever witnessed. Indescribable. -

Yes, it's seriously impressive.
I had the opportunity to witness a pair of Hornets do a supersonic flyby and then go ballistic on full afterburner right above the ship I was on. Nothing like it! I will never forget it! The pressure, force and shear volume of noise was unnerving and awesome at the same time.
Man, the civilian sector is so boring! If Obama wasn't un-funding the military, I'd start looking for a job with a defense contractor again tomorrow.Expert Moron Extraordinaire

Go to Dhalgren Naval Base when they are testing the 14 inch guns! The shock wave damn near put my van on two wheels!
And yes, the JSF is loud. Very loud. Especially when utilizing the VTOL capabilities. There is a louder fighter that I've heard though. The F-22 Raptor is louder. But the F-14 Tomcats on full afterburner...yeah, it's like they are powered by God shouting. I saw two do a sub-sonic flyby off the coast of San Diego several years on the way to Miramar I guess it was. The commander of the destroyer I was on told us it was the last flight before they became museum pieces and they had to drain the fuel tanks so the jet jockeys were out **** around.Expert Moron Extraordinaire

Pax River? Good grief - that brings back memories - I worked there as a GS-4 Engineering Tech as a summer hire in college.
The F-18s were still there for testing - not operational in the fleet.
They have this huge anechoic chamber for EW testing that they actually hang airplanes in via a strap so they can have the wheels up for simulating free space testing.
One summer they were going to show off the new chamber to the brass by opening the chamber and showing an F18 hanging.
They strapped up the F18 and began to hoist it up when the strap broke apart and the F18 dropped to the floor....
Good thing the gear was still down!
But when that strap broke - scared the bejeezus out of me - sounded like an explosion - and then seeing that F18 drop by 8 feet.
Still - that was soft by carrier landing standards
