Is anyone good at repairing....

I would like my crossovers looked at for my older pioneer speakers.
Also, if anyone knows how to recone or fix speakers, figure out what is wrong with them that would be great as well.
I posted a thread awhile ago about these speakers. Pioneer CS-77A
I looked around and, it just costs way to much to buy exact replicas of these speakers. *the woofers and such...)
They are really nice speakers and I was wondering if anyone is "techy" enough to maybe figure out what the problems is.
Basically. I turn the volume to half way on ANY receiver and the speakers sent the receiver into protect mode.
Or, if anyone could maybe tune up the crossovers ( I know a few people here are geniuses with that stuff) and suggest just some newer parts?

Its a 4 way system, with a horn tweeter, a cone tweeter, a midrange and a woofer.

- 4-Way / 4-Driver, "Infinite Baffle" / Air / Acoustic Suspension cabinet design
- Pioneers "F.B." design driver cones deliver more rigidity and lightweight performance resulting in quicker response and better mid-end with less distortion
- 30 cm / 12" "FB" (Free-Beating, wool impregnated pulp) Woofer
- 12 cm / 5" "FB" Midrange
- 7 cm / 2.75" "FB" Tweeter
- Multi-cell Super-Tweeter for less "beam" and greater dispersion over standard compression horns.
- "Real" 4-way crossover with crossover points @ 450 Hz, 3600 Hz and 14KHz.
- All Pioneer built components
- Dual 3-position Mid and Top-end Frequency level attenuators
- Push-button inputs

Specs:
Impedance: 8 ohms
Efficiency: 95dB 1w @ 1m
Frequency Response: 35-20,000 Hz, +/- 3 dB

Probably not worth the money and time. Not to mention unless someone was close they could be damaged beyond repair during shipping. I know you mentioned having a sentimental attachment in the other thread, but unless you can do the work yourself or are willing to spend more than they are worth by a substantial amount, I'm not sure it's worth it.

I fully agree with H9. If you really want to get them working and learn then just check for some part express kits that would match and you can throw in. I did that for old radio shack speakers. I just ordered new dirvers and be done with it as I didn't want to trash them but don't even use them. I also did the same for my AKAI speakers, I couldn't find the original mid drivers and simply replaced them with similar matching mid drivers from parts express. I also kept the boxes of some Hitachi HSP-3450. I got rid of all the crappy woofers and tweeters and eventually refurb them with non OEM drivers and tweeters. However, this is only a hobby and recycling as you have to realize that it can be just as expensive as newer speakers (IE: recent sales on Polk monitors) and will probably not provide you with even half of the performance.

    Cheers!

It would be the shipping that would be the deal breaker though I mean they stand about 3-4 feet tall and like 2 feet wide, weigh at least 50 pounds each...solid walnut cabinet I think...
I know ebay is doing free listings until the 1st so. I will have to try a couple listings out.

First, make sure none of your voice coils have a dead short. Then replace all caps with these: http://www.parts-express.com/dayton-metallized-capacitors.cfm

In that case go for it, maybe someone needs parts or the cabinet to repair another set of the same?

    Cheers and good luck!

Face- How ill I know which ones are which?
And, about the parting thing I have no clue which ones are bad and which ones aren't.
I may take a look at that sometime soon. See, if maybe the drivers can be uprooted and replaced...any idea on how to match that stuff?
As for the caps... I have to solder right? Can't just poke them in there?

Or list them for parts on Craigslist. I recently got a guy in Colorado to remove the drivers and XO's from a pair of old Cannon speakers for me. Didn't need the cabs, just the guts.

I don't have good luck with craigslist. I had a mishap once. I stay away from stuff like that. I usually don't do deals with people unless I have a verified address, phone number and they take picks that can prove they are sending the item.
Yeah I burned once way back when your regular xbox was the cool thing to have. A guy had a modded one I payed him $45 (I was like 14 at the time and that was a lot of money to me) My family wasn't well off and xboxs were really expensive and mom&dad couldn't afford one so with all my Christmas money that I was going to save for a ps2 I sent the guy the money, never got the xbox, filed mail fraud on him for years. Got a letter from the post office saying that the mail fraud I had filed on him helped send to jail but they "Unfortunately could not compensate my loss"
S0. I am very picky. As is I sent around 140 to a guy on audiogon...even with him having 190 ebay rating all 100% and 2 positive audiogon ratings I am still very nervous.

PC, you have to look at each componet for their value sand then proceed as Face told you with PE. In order to check the coils you at least need a multimeter or ohmeter. You also need a good quality soldering iron (preferanbly adjustable heat). The of course you need to have minimum skills in desoldering and resoldering.

Good luck and enjoy if you choose this path and don't forget it will be a learning experience for you no matter what ;)

    Cheers!

    That was funny

I guess we should let you read some of the info and maybe tomorrow ask for what do not understand. By the way if Dad owns some he more likely can show yop off hands how to use one. You surely borrow one from him,,, and maybe a soldering iron, right?
