I HATE When This Happens

I hired a law firm awhile back to do some stuff for me. I wasn't real crazy about the firm. Today I received two pieces of correspondence from them, or the attorney who WAS handling my affairs. The first one I opened is a bill. That's it. This guy has nickeled and dimed me enough on unsolicited phone calls, emails, etc. I call them up to tell them they are FIRED.

"Well so and so isn't here today, can I review the bill and see if everything is okay?"

"You can do that and more, I just fired you. Good day."

Then I opened up the second piece of correspondence from them. It was a letter from so and so telling me he is going out on a medical disability, and won't be representing me anymore, "but we have many other real professionals here and....."

That rat **** retired before I could fire him.

that sucks, I would continue to raise a stink with the law firm and see what charges you can get overturned considering he "retired" w/o even the courtesy of a phone call.

Lodge a complaint with the state BAR association. There is also a fund that covers attorney malpractice if their conduct (or lack thereof) rises to that level.

Since GG is in NJ I'm sure that any complaint to the state BAR association would need to be accompanied by a sizable amount of cash, if you wanted something to actually happen. So in light of that error in my advice, please see Mr Dorokusai's wisdom and more effective solution above.

I already have two counselors/firms on my payroll. Well, I'm down to one NOW. I retained one to do the actual number crunching/estate tax/inheritance tax etc. Actually, I did a lot of the number crunching. Anyhow, that's the firm I dismissed today. I employed a completely different firm to handle some "questions" I had regarding significant sums of money and some of my dad's closer "friends". The relationship with this firm is very upbeat and has proved quite fruitful.

The firm I dismissed called back at about 2:30 today, and in a very conciliatory tone, told me to forget the bill I received in the mail today. I told them I would certainly do that. I also suggested that they further review my records (I have copies if they need) and see if I wasn't eligible for some other "promotions" that they might be offering, such as a military discount, ON TOP of a over-55 discount, ON TOP of a AAA of New Jersey discount, cause even tearing up the bill, they'd never see my business again unless I was.

I was told to expect further details from Mr. So and So's immediate supervisor, who by letting Mr So and So run rampant with a friggin' telephone pissed me off to no end and started the whole thing. I need to speak to him is right.

I deal with law firms on a daily basis. There are 5 or so main ones I use for my work, and while they are very helpful and are will to do whatever I need, they always charge for everything.

I still think the best bill I've seen by a law firm was for 600 dollars an hour for someone to photocopy something. LOVED that one. Just wish I saw what they charge for an actual days worth of work (and no it wasn't one of the firms we use).

With all the talk these days of limiting pay for bankers, insurance co, wall street firms, can't image what lawyers charge is not considered in any reform bill. Wait...lawyers are writing those bills, ooops.:D

Good for you George. I also fired a lawyer over 20 years ago for colluding with the other side. Wrote him a letter so POTENT that as soon as he opened it he CALLED 'me' at work! And told me that HE HAD NEVER BEEN SO 'INSULTED' IN HIS LIFE.... NO ONE HAD ever sent him anything like that before.

I added...,in case you didn't get it, YOUR services are no longer needed and I'll be by to pick up MY FILES!

Oh, and I paid him NOTHING!

We know sharks eat their young, but they also eat their old, this particular Esquire's retirement karma might really bite.

Courtney. I feel honored. I haven't seen you in quite awhile. What's doing?
The conversation would have started along these lines:

Me: "Mr So & So, I'll pay this bill if you can look me in the eye and tell me you WANT me to pay this bill, despite the fact that:

    1) The phone call was unsolicited.

    2) The phone call was in total regard to an affair that you were not hired to provide me counsel on.

    3) My total participation in this conversation or "conference" consisted of the statements:

    a. Don't ever call me with this kind of drivel again.

    b. Which one of my lawyers are you?

    c. Your services to the estate are at an end. If we require more service/counsel, I WILL CONTACT YOU. Do not call me anymore looking for answers that I can't give you, and mean nothing to you anyway.

    d. Do NOT bill me for this call.

Wish I had something honorable to report back, but nothing more than losing touch with Polk reality....good to see you still tearing it up here!

Sounds like the response you'd give me if I admitted that I got rid of my turntables and went digital....

I'll stay home just for you. As long as it's something the mailman brings, and not actually you. The you-ness of you is something best confined to NJ. If you know what I mean. And you do. And I apologize for mentioning zippers and you in the same post. I was off my meds. Seriously.

This is brilliant, Sinatra-esque lyrics, but should be sung by an Elmer Fudd bawitone to be appweciated.
