I only have a duo core Intel e8400 that runs stock at 3 GHz. However I have a Corsair sealed liquid cooling unit with radiator and 120mm fan and that allows me to comfortably overclock it to 4 GHz. That with 8 gigs of ram and my computer is very fast. I'm running Windows 7 Extreme 64 bit. I have a terabyte drive, two 550 gig drives, a 250 gig and a 160 gig. Also a Radeon 5770 video card. A 700 watt Antec Trupower PS supplies the juice for all that. Next upgrade will be a SSD for the OS.

I hear you about cooling. Its very important to have good cooling if your going to overclock. I have my I7 860 (stock frequency is 2.79 GHZ) clocked to 4 GHZ. The system idle temp is 27C and while encoding it goes to a max of 43C. I have been very pleased with my Noctua DH-14 air cooler as it has great build quality but you defiatley want to have room in your case. I use a HAF932 case by Cooler Master. It has 3 x 230mm fanns as well as a 140 mm fan.

Here are some pics of my rig that shows the cooler.
