"Ideal" speaker placement

In a 5.1 surround system, what would be the "ideal" location for each speaker? The reason I ask is that I have a short t.v. stand that my t.v. currently sits on (40" Samsung LCD). The receiver I am going to buy HAS to sit on top due to its size (will not fit in the cabinet). I will have to mount the t.v on the wall, but do not want it too high, and was thinking about mounting the center channel above the t.v. (approx. 64" from floor) Would this be ok for the center channel to sit that high? How about the other channels? Where are the ideal locations for those (distance, height, etc.) Thanks for your input.

If possible you tv should be at eye level while sitting. At my old place, because of space I mounted my center channel on top of a fireplace mantel. Not the best position for the center but it worked out pretty good at the time. Tweak it the best you can to fit the space and it should be fine.

With your tv mounted that high just below the tv would be best. Is it possible to mount it on a shelf between the tv and receiver. That would be ideal in your situation.

Hey, Joe. This is how things kind of lay out-

24" to the top of the t.v. stand. If the receiver sits on top of that (which it has to) thats another say 7" (approx. 31" total). Then I can either mount the center channel (CS10) on a shelf above that, say about 4" between the receiver and the shelf, puts the CS10 at about 40", then the t.v above that which puts the bottom of the t.v at about 42" and the top of the t.v at about 66". If I put the center channel ABOVE the t.v. then the CS10 will end up about 66" at the bottom of it. Pretty much screwed either way. My whole thinking was that I wanted a tv stand that was closed (doors, drawers) but now I see those open ones with the built in brackets for hanging the tv on (glass and metal) and kind of like those. Will I lose a lot of soundstage with the center channel so high? Thoughts?
