Hi there,

I've got a set of SR5250's on the way and looking for a quality amp to power them. They will be installed in dampened/sealed large 2 door. Basically I'm going with the Clarion DPX/APX series amps as they seem to be built very well.

What would be better for the same price?

90x2 rms or 180x2 rms?

Common sense says 90x2 but it's just hard to pass up on twice the wattage for the same price... :)

    Best way would be to bi-amp them. Use a 4 channel amp in the 50-75 watts per channel range and run the tweeters off the amps front channels and the mids off the amps rear channels. This will give you a lot more flexibility in tuning the tweeters output in relation to the mid which will go a long way to help your overall SQ.

    I currently have in my car a Kicker ZX700.5 that I've had since 2007. The thing that bothers me with the amp is in the white paper it's power ratings are at 1% THD and also I feel the subwoofer amp is a little lacking for my SR10 subwoofer. I am going to try the speakers on this amp as I really like it and it's a workhorse. Unfortunately my HU (Pioneer F90BT) doesn't do Active or else Id go that route.
    # RMS Power Rating:

    * 4 ohms: 70 watts x 4 chan. + 210 watts x 1 Class D Sub channel
    * 2 ohms: 85 watts x 4 chan. + 420 watts x 1 Class D Sub channel
    * 4 ohms (bridged): 130 watts x 2 chan. + 420 watts x 1 chan. (2 ohms sub channel, 210 watts @ 4 ohms)

    Well, the SR's handles 2x 100w rms, a lot of power.
    I don't think you'll need more than 2x 90w rms though.

    But hey Mac, what's the power of the tweeters and woofers individually?
    I guess something like 30w for tweets and 70w for woofs? Or maybe 20/80? :)
    The reason I'm asking is that I only use the woofers now and would like to know...

    TTT - Both mids and the tweets will handle 100watts per driver comfortably.

    OP - You're set for power. Kicker makes solid amps. Just bi-amp like Mac said. If your hu lets you go active do that else bi-amp passively via your passive xovers.

    the sr drivers are capable of handling 175 watts (6500 should be able to handle more power), I'm currently bi-amping the sr5250 with my pdx 4.150 pushing 173rms

    Wow. I don't think I will be following in your footsteps. If it works for ya it works, but it would scare me to overdrive them that much.

    hehe, arn't you ever curious to see how much wattage a driver can actually handle? I know I do, and I find it fun to see if I can just push it w/o it being damaged. I picked up the 4.150 just to see how much punishment these comps can actually handle hahaha. My main amp is the 4.100 that pushes 130rms.

    It's not about how loud you can play the sr's. Its more about how sweet and lifelike you can get them to sound. 100-120 watts is plenty for them to shineand for you to have some decent headroom.

    I'd listen to Mac and Skip. The 4.100 is plenty. You can run them off the 4.150, but you'll have to set the gains on the amp low and watch that volume knob. But since you're trying to see how much power they will take, a.k.a. how loud they will play, it might just be safer to run the 4.100. ;)

    Yeah, I know they can go loud - but the 5250's doesn't handle that much when crossed
    as low as I want. I like them at 50hz (24db's/octave), but I currently have them at 63hz
    (18db's/octave) in order to play really loud. If I want to go even louder, I'd cross at 80hz. ;)

    (with the crossover at 80hz, they can go extremely loud!!)

    The SR's doesn't handle all that much with 18db's/octave at 63 either, gotta be at least 24db's which is my highest opportunity. It does play down below 40hz with 18db's? I'm no expert in this slope-thing...
