Vinyl Rediscoveries

There are many vinyl recordings that have never made the transfer to CDs....shame that....as some recordings are worthy gems...some forgotten - waiting to be rediscovered.

One such of worthy attention for those that like tight progressive rock from the late '70s is from a Canadian rock group called Wireless.

I remember as a long haired teenager attending a concert by the 'Priest' and having to endure listening to some unknown opening act before getting to the main attraction.

Yet....surprisingly....I was enthalled by the tempo, tightness, and energy of this unknown band called Wireless. Great licks, perfect drum tempos, evocative harmonies, fast wicked guitars, driving rythms.

After the concert I picked up one of their albums and played it over and over on my TT and mediocre system. It was on my heavy 'rotation list' :D

To my regret, as I made the transition to the modern medium of cds, I sold many of my vinyl LPs to my brother - including my only copy of Wireless' "Positively Human, Relatively Sane".

Fast forward 20 some odd years and the recent impulse to buy an LP copy to rediscover this album - having been this many years to revisit auditory memory.

The rituals were familiar...lovingly slide the album out of its jacket...carefully caress its edges to place it delicately on the platter....meticulous attention to clean the vinyl with my discwasher brush and fluid...with utmost care, softly clean the stylus - then let it descend to play the music.

With the lights off and the volume up to fill the room I relived the grooves.

Wow....

I couldn't stop smiling - not just at the nostalgic journey of my youth, but at the sonic goodness as well.

It...never....sounded....soooo....goood.

Despite the occassional crackle, or pop - the smoothness was intoxicating and engaging.

If you enjoy progressive rock from the 70's, appreciate tight rhythms, engaging melodies - then I think you will really like "Positively Human, Relatively Sane".

The sonics are really good, too - clean, good dynamics, wide soundstage.
Side B is worth the price of the LP by itself.

Vinyl done right is down right sweet!

Great story Erik! Glad you got da glow!

I have a similar story but not as good as yours.

When I was 12 or 13 I went to see Emerson Lake & Palmer, ticket price $1.50!!!!. We get there and are all excited and higher than kites. We were sitting in the middle of the arena about 10 rows off the stage when we realized there was an opening act. We asked around about who the opener was and it was this band from England called 'YES.' Well we never heard of them.

THEY BLEW THE ROOF OFF THE PHILADELPHIA SPECTRUM!!! . . . so much so that it took ELP an half hour before they could get the crowd excited again and it didn't happen until Keith Emerson got pissed off at the crowd and ripped the keyboard off the stand and went nuts playing it and maching gunning the front row with it. Needless to say I've purchased every Yes LP ever made.

Although I've never seen Yes live, I do have all there albums with most on vinyl, as well as Anderson Bruford Wakemen and Howe which is also a superb album. Love that band.

I've never heard of Wireless despite living in Canada but I will look for them in my pursuit of vinyl. Thanks for the tip.

I've never heard of Wireless until Erik's post. I'd like to try to find a copy.

Kelvin, YES & ELP put on some of the best shows I've seen and I've seen hundreds of concerts.

I swear by all that is holy to rock - this is a much under appreciated album.

Find it, spin it, and enjoy some really well crafted music!

Side A is good, but Side B is kick butt!

Great story Joe. YES are fantastic to see live. Absolutely one of my favorite bands to see live. I also very much enjoy Eric Johnson live. Especially the 1990-1991 tour. He was using two 100 watt amps for that tour and that sounded amazing. I don't have every YES LP, but do have the critical ones: The YES album, Fragile, CTTE, Tals From Topographic Oceans, Relayer and Going For The One.

Taken from a recent Audioholics reply regarding "Club Polk" and Polk speakers:
"I'm yet to hear a Polk speaker that merits more than a sentence and 60 seconds discussion." :\
My response is: If you need 60 seconds to respond in one sentence, you probably should't be evaluating Polk speakers.....

Thanks for the kind offer but I wouldn't want to chance some mailman being like Newman on Seifeld, "crush, crumple, cram, fold!";) LOL!!!
