I could not believe it until I read it... Kevein Costner may have the means to assist in recovering oil in the gulf! This appears to NOT be a joke or a publicity stunt. I am stunned to say the least.:eek:

While it pains me a bit for Mr Kostner to get uber-rich and remembered for this (I would rather he be remembered for his crappy movies:rolleyes:) I am glad that someone from LaLa Land has put his money where his mouth is and at least has made the attempt to make a difference.

Don't see why it wouldn't. Centrifuges work on weight of substances in them. Oil is lighter than water and even if two or more substances are dissolved in a solution or even just suspended in each other, a centrifuge can be used to systematically separate a large majority of those substances from each other.

Under normal gravity, they may not separate. But under the heightened "gravity" that the G forces in a centrifuge puts on a solution, the different substances could easily be separated.

Another option is to use a still to distill the elements from each other. Oil has a much higher boiling point than sea water. However, it is inefficient, especially considering fuel sources and the cost vs. outcome. Also, adding heat to the oil/water solution will change chemical bonds and you might end up with something equally or worse so, more toxic than what you started with.

A centrifuge is much more efficient and doesn't necessarily change molecular structures. That way not only do you get the water out of the oil but you can recover the lost oil and package it up for refining.

Who really cares if the man gets rich solving a problem that causes economic and environmental problems with a device that is both affordable and effective? You are going to sit there and be that shallow because you dislike the man as an actor and damn his project to failure over your own petty, shallow misgivings? That really speaks to your character.

And if you are going to insult the man, at least give Mr. Costner the common decent to spell his name correctly.

Personally, kudos to Mr. Costner for seeing a need, putting the funding in place HIMSELF to find someone smarter than him to put his ideas in action and then getting it out in the public view. Instead of standing on a pulpit in Hollywood ranting that someone should do something, he went and became that someone and did something. That speaks to his character too. If he makes a few bucks for his efforts then I'm glad to see it. He put the time, money and effort in to saving some very critical waterways and as an avid fisherman bent on keeping our coasts clean and healthy as well, the man has earned my respect for a long time to come.

Re-read the post John(correctly spelled I hope;)) I do point out that I am thankful he stepped up to the plate to make a difference rather than just claim moral superiority on the issue because he has a good intention. If all celebs were so bold as to do the same thing, the world could be a better place.:)

The healthy dose of sarcasm in the post is warranted by the fact that actors/actresses in general always seem to put themselves into such stories for their own publicity rather than actually doing anything to help. Mr. Costner gets a bit of respect from me for doing something completely unpredicted and changing the script.

You stuck your foot in your mouth yet again. Stop trying to back peddle and spin it. It's probably not easy to back-peddle with one foot stuck in your mouth anyway. If you mis-spoke then say so. Once again John, re-read the thread. As always, you seek to be combative and argumentative. I stated that I think his movies are not the best(Dances with Wolves/Field of Dreams excepted) but his actions should be commended. I was listening to news radio on the way to lunch and they mentioned BP taking Costner's idea and trying it out on the oil spill. It clogged. "Scientists" are now trying to make modifications.

Furthermore, BP is testing 250 different ideas and is overwhelmed by the number of suggestions. Critics say they aren't listening. BP says they are and that they're also talking with their competitors for ideas on the cleanup.

I could care less if a 5th grader came up with a solution. Kevin bought that patent awhile ago, not like he did it just for this spill. Innovative idea's is whats needed in many industries.Every little bit helps, there is no one solution to this problem. Saw an interesting stat today too. Deep water wells,around the globe, we have 14,000 of them ? If thats true, you have to admit, generally speaking, this particular situation doesn't happen often. Kudo's to Costner for putting his money where it could do some good. There have been many Hollywood types who pretty much detached themselves from that stigma to do good...Paul Newman comes to mind. That man set an example I hope Costner and others would follow.

From an ABC News interview I read, Costner invested $20 million of his money to develop this device and was frustrated that neither the government nor any of the oil companies wanted to try out his machine....until now.

"It may seem an unlikely scenario that I'm the one delivering this technology at this moment in time, but from where I'm sitting, it is equally inconceivable that these machines are not already in place"

Btw, 15 other nations offer assistance to plug the oil well or help the clean-up efforts....yet our government declined. WTF??!!

I can think of a few reasons.......

To protect Unions by not dropping the Jones act. That would allow foreign vessels into American waters to help. Bush did this during Katrina. Obama has yet to or maybe never will.

To prolong the disaster to push an agenda...as we see now, he is doing just that.

The man has been on the golf coarse twice as many times as he's been to the gulf....and went to 4 fundraisers too. Real concern...real leadership at it's best.

Considering the ongoing environmental crisis in the Gulf of Mexico, former Labor Secretary Robert Reich thinks the US government should takeover BP.

The US government took over General Motors and AIG when the actions of those companies threatened the US economy. Now that BP's actions are threatening the Gulf of Mexico, Robert Reich, the Secretary of Labor under Bill Clinton, told PRI's "The Takeaway" that President Obama should take over BP, too.

"The problem here," according to Reich, "is that BP not only has a terrible track record in terms of cutting corners and creating not only environmental problems but unsafe working conditions." Reich also believes that the American people can't trust the information coming from BP.

"The Obama administration keeps saying BP is in charge because BP has the equipment and expertise necessary to do what’s necessary," Reich wrote on his blog. And while that's true, putting the company in to temporary receivership could harness that expertise. It could also make sure that the expertise is used for the public interest, rather than the interests of shareholders.

The takeover would be temporary, under Reich's plan. Most importantly, though, it would put the President -- who is responsible to the American people instead of corporate shareholders -- in charge of the cleanup. Reich believes that temporary receivership would ensure that adequate resources would be devoted to the problem and that more truthful information would be shared. He told "The Takeaway:"

We have a national emergency in the Gulf -- obviously the most devastating environmental crisis we have had ever in our history. And to leave the major portion of the responsibility for cleaning up the gulf and for stopping that gusher to the company that created it in the first place, just seems unwise.

This is the way of the future... push a company to the brink and then assume control under the guise of "too big/vital to fail". Make no mistake, this administration is at war. Terrorists are no longer the enemy, the American way of life for since our founding is.
