Music today (recording)

Loudness wars suck.
I went to a class show at my son's school today. Basically it consisted of 5 classes dancing to 5 different songs.
The 1st two songs were from "Camp Rock" (modern Disney musical) and "High School Musical" (same). I told my wife that the sound system in the auditorium was, I believe the words I used were, "an abomination to all that is holy and good".
I mean severe audible distortion, sounded terrible. I was thinking great I have to sit through 3 more songs of this bad audio hoping, for the schools sake, that nothing blew out or caught on fire.
Well the next 3 songs were "The Twist" covered by Chubby Checkers, "Surfin' U.S.A." by The Beach Boys, and "Greased Lightnin'" from the movie "Grease". Well what do you know, they all sounded pretty good.
I was in view of the pre-amp, eq and amp area the whole time and no one changed anything during the show. Why does alot of modern music recording suck so bad? Is it because it is really hard to clip stock ipod ear buds? LOL
Like 4 different decades of recordings and the 50's, 60's, and 70's beat the hell out of the 2000's. Where is my jet pack and hover car?

I experienced the same at a middle school "Poetry Jam" last Thursday. Insance distortion, coupled with kids (& adults) overloading the mic by placing it practically down through throats. One teacher's vocabulary consisted primarily of "YEAAAAAAHA!" and "BOOOOOOOY!" It was 3 hours of torture. The only respite was about 3 kids who knew how to use a microphone & came through relatively clearly.
To be fair--I'm considerably pickier, audio-wise, than I was in High School. Still....
