Monitor 10 questions

I recently acquired a pair of Monitor 10's for very little money.

My first question: The tweeters are called "silver coil dome" - Is that the best option for me or, should I look at a different Polk tweeter to replace.

Second question: I have done a crossover upgrade on my Klipsch but, is there any crossover upgrade available from Polk direct or, is someone on the forum doing crossover upgrades that I should contact? Also, how much am I looking at for a an upgrade?

Thanks in advance

Call polk customer service and they will tell which of the RDO solk dome tweeters they have as an upgrade. Its either the RDO194 or 198.

You can upgrade the resitors and caps in the crossover.

There is a sticky on the vintage speaker section with schematics for your speaker or contact Ben who does them for people.

RD0194-1 is the correct Polk replacement and it's a far superior sounding tweeter to the old tired sl2000 (silver coil dome). Tell them you are a Club Polk member and you get a discount plus free 2 day shipping.

If you are even a little bit handy with a soldering iron X-over refreshing is a breeze. Just replace the same value caps and resistors with new Flim caps and Non-inductive wire wound Mills resistors. Clarity, Dayton and Sonicaps are recommended non-electrolytic capacitors by many who have used them.

I personally like the Clarity PX or SA line for the Monitor series and Sonicaps for the SDA series.

Good luck and the difference upgrading the x-over and tweets is significant and well worth the time and effort.

Whenever you want your mind blown then get the RD0194-1 replacement silk dome tweets and refresh your X-over's. I've done it to two pairs of Polks now the difference is night and day.

The RD0 tweeters can't be used as a replacement for the Peerless tweets...but there isn't a need anyway. The Peerless tweets sound fantastic!

The Peerless equipped Monitors used different crossover architecture in the high frequency circuit, and the tweeter cutout is a different size.

I have a pair of Monitor 10's, (original owner and love them still) and am looking to build a home theater system using them as fronts. Would a pair of R1's work as rears with a C2 as the center speaker? I would appreciate any advice/ info in building the system. Am considering an Onkyo receiver, 5.1. On a budget with a not so supporting spouse in the venture but 2 teenage sons that are just awestruck when I take the covers off the cranked up 10's.
    Thanks

My understanding is that the components in a x-over loose spec over time, for instance the capacitors in particular.

The Monitor 10 is easier than the Klipsch (depending on model of Klipsch) and it's a very easy crossover to replace caps and resistors on.

The crossover upgrade is a MUST. You'll not believe how much the mids tighten up and respond. As good as this old speaker sounds the upgrade will amaze you.

Cost? $30 and up depending on how exotic you want to get.

You'll also want to seal up the cabinets while you've got the speakers down.

Most definitely replace the SL2000 with the RDO tweeters.

For the amount of cash outlay you'll have a very hard time finding a better sounding speaker even at many times the cost.

Like they said-- replace the caps and resistors in the crossover, use a quality cap/resistor (such as sonicap and mills) and you can thank everyone later.Good luck.
