This is my 1st post here, Ive been a member on other AV forums for years but wanted to get some opinions here. Thanks for any and all help.

I have a HT at my house. The room is fairly large at 24*22ish. Ive been running a older setup for about 2 years now. I have a older Harman Kardon reciever which will not be powerful enough for my newer setup. I will be currenty running:

2 Polk 70s
Polk CS20
FX300i surround i believe. there older and will be replaced shortly
velodyne subwoofer 12

When we built the HT room, it was setup for 7.1 etc. Since my current receiver does not do full 1080p pass through all the wires are already run so they can just be plugged into the new receiver. The reason I say this is because i know the Onkyo 607 and 707 differance for running 1080p.

Ive been looking at the Onkyo 608 and 707. I would consider a different model etc. But judging how good onkyo reviews are, and the fact im running a Onkyo 606 in my living room, im kinda leaning towards another one.

This room is used for movies about 90% of the time, very randomly a sports event or TV will be watched. Im not trying to cheep out but saving money is a concern. So with the setup I will be running what receiver will do the best job? Like i said I am not to concerned about the 1080p pass through, but want enough power for the room.

Welcome to Club Polk. Your HT room looks good. I would suggest getting at least the 700 series Onkyo if that is your brand preference. You should have a receiver that has preamp putputs to allow the use of an external amp. A big room needs a big amp and most AVR's simply can't provide quality audio at a high output.

I would also suggest that you look at the Pioneer receivers. They run cooler than the Onkyos and have top line features. The Pioneer SC Series Elite receivers are a first choice. The new Pioneer VSX-1120-K is another new receiver coming out in June worth considering.

Thanks for reply, i was looking at one pioneer receiver online which was around the price of the onkyo 608.

i was doing some more research on here and found acouple people running the moniter 70 with the onkyo 606, which I can get another one for pretty cheep. Do you think that, that 606 would work well or should i really just spend the extra money and get the 707. In all honestly I dont use the HT room alot, maybe 3 times a month.

The Monitor 70's sound better with more power, so yes I definitely think it is worth the money to get the Onkyo 707 over the 600 series. You have put a lot into the room, so when you do watch a movie or listen to music, you want it to be good. Many people get the lower price Onkyo and then regret not getting the next level.

Accessories4less has some good prices on refurbished Onkyos that are worth considering.

thats a pretty price, never bought a refurbished unit before. Do you think its worth the extra 100 go get a new one? Newegg and 6th avenue have it for 579.99.

    thats a good idea

That is up to you, but Accessories4less is the factory authorized dealer for refurbished products.
You can purchase a 3 year warranty for about $33 or a 5 year warranty for about $70 and still come out ahead.
The Newegg or 6th Avenue prices are a good discount from the list price, but I would go with the units from Accessories4less with a warranty.

i think this might be the best bet.....last question, do you know the difference between the 706 and 707? since the 706 is about 70 dollars cheaper.

The 707 will be more refined and has the option to add height speakers for dolby 2z and I think with that addition it would have more resale value ......... if you ever decide to sell to one of the guys here

I think its going to be awesome having you as a new member of the family so welcome to club polk .......... I call first dibs if you ever sell it

Don't know what your budget is but if I were you and your HK has pre outs get yourself a good 7 channel amp.

Once you have a good amp you can upgrade the processor to what ever comes out in the future. Amp technology does not change much but an AVR amp does not do as well as a separate amp.
Sunfire TGP, Sunfire Cinema Grand, Sunfire 300~2 (2), Sunfire True Sub (2),Carver ALS Platinum, Carver AL III, TFM-55, C-19, C-9, TX-8, SDA-490t, SDA-390t

Not sure there is a big difference other than their vintage, you will need to do a side by side comparison of the spec's. The newer Onkyo does have a second subwoofer output.

Well its more like an internal y splitter as you cant perform different level calibration on them subs

Id like to stay around 500. My old HK does not have pre amp outs.
