Well, I was really deep into high eff speaks/ low powered SET amps for many years. The sound is super and talk about intimacy!

I slowly sold my pieces and after a few years, I NEED that sound again. I want a 300B amp and a pair of Omega Super 5 Bipole for my next purchase http://omegaloudspeakers.com/products/specialapps

Don't get me wrong, I absolutely dig my Low eff speakers and powerful amps I own now. But that SET/high eff sound is so seductive. I rotate gear every few months or so, and I need both types of sound lol

Are there any SET amp/ high eff or single driver users in here?

I've got a buddy who's got a modded SET Decware amp and Decware HDT Fostex single-driver speakers. There is really something to the listening experience in front of his setup--It's not perfect, but it does things that are just mesmerizing.

    Jay,
Yeah, that's what I'm talking about. It's a very unique sound. I love female vocals on these systems. I had a pair of Omega with 8" Fostex drivers that I miss.

    Jake,
Wow, very impressive. Mind sharing the brand/model# and design? Looks like some serious driver tubes! Are those 300B or 2A3 outputs? What speakers are you using? I love the looks of that unit.

Beautiful! I want to try tubes out sometime- I prefer warm sound. My SS Nad integrated is on the warm side, so its ok for now, but from what I've heard I prefer tube sound.

It the pre-production unit for Shuguang's new Treasure Series amplifiers. The one I have is the 300B as identified correctly, and uses Shuguang Treasure 300B and 6CA7-Z. It also has a remote which is my favorite part, but the sound quality is fantastic and I like that I comes with upgraded tubes from the factory. BTW, it does have a cage for the tubes, but I think it's pretty ugly so haven't used it.

I am using Klipsch Fortes with the amp and only need to turn the volume up to 9 o'clock to do any listening. It's a great combination.

I'm into it. Still have the drivers and plans to build the Decware HDT speakers and pickup a 300B, 45 or 2A3 amp.

Cool. My buddy built his HDTs as well. Post your progress whenever you get around to that project!

Oh, yes! The single full range driver sound seduced me a few years back. First build was a Metronome with Fostex FE108eSigma drivers. Then came the Half Chang with Fostex FE206e. Then Fonken (prime) with FE127e.

Last summer I lost control and did 4 builds: Fostex FF85k in something I designed and called the Sprites which I used for break-in; then I moved the FF85k’s into micro-Fonkens. I had to see if there was magic in Alnico magnets, so I built Metronomes with the F120A. Late in the season I couldn’t resist building a variation on Martin King’s passive OB using the FF85k and Eminence Alpha 15a.

For decades I have used (and loved) what are now classic SS receivers: Sansui 4000 and Yamaha CR-1000. I found that the F120A’s sound kinda pitiful on SS amps, so I bought a Miniwatt S1--pentode tubes run single ended in ultra linear mode. The F120A is only 89 dB sensitive, but the 2.5 wpc Miniwatt really makes them sing!

For those who might want a taste of SE amps on a budget, Miniwatt is now selling a new version with EL-84 tubes that yield 3.5 wpc. Reports on its sound are pretty positive.

    Photos:
    1) L to R: Metronome w/ F120A; Metronome w/ FE108eSigma, MJK OB w/ FF85k and Alpha 15a
    2) Half Chang w/ FE206e
    3) Fonken (prime) w/ FE127e and Micro-Fonken w/ FF85k

    Cheers, Jim

Full range drivers are nice, as long as you don't mind the missing highs and lows. :D

Agreed, but I wouldn't mind trying the Omega Compact Hemp. There is just something to be said/heard about multi-driver full range speakers.

    Jake,
Sweet man. I thought I noticed the Shuguang bird logo on the unit but didn't know they made gear until you mentioned it. Those black glass tubes are very expensive and it's their selected premiums. If you ever want to roll some 300B's, Shuguang has 3 different types now.

Nice to see another Klipsch fan. I have a pair of RF-35 and Cornwalls. I used to have the sweet La Scalas. Thanks for posting the Klipsch Jubilee pic. Those things are monsters. Have you visited the Klipsch forum? There are quite a few members with the Jubilees.

    Madmax,
Yeah man. You have one hell of a High eff set up. 300B and AG's. Keep us posted on your Decware project. Have you heard the 2A3 yet? I wasn't really able to get into it. The 300B give a nicer high end with colorful mids. I found this lacking in the 2A3 but the bass is more potent. I thought I was hearing stuff but my dealer told me he noticed the same thing. If you've heard them, did you notice this too?

    Jim,
Excellent work! They look great and I bet they sound awesome too. I guess that seductive sound really got to you eh? lol:D. Thanks for sharing. Incase you want to play around more with amps, I had killer results with my single driver connected to a pair of Gainclone mono blocks. That was the only SS that worked well with my single driver. If you're bored, you could try modding your amp from pentode to triode. Very easy to do and takes less than 15mins.

    Face,
The lows should be covered for me. I'm running two subs right now. I dind't mind missing that last bit of high freq ext. With proper toe in, you can get it since they tend to beam the highs.

Don't get me wrong that I have a pair of Jubilees; but they are massive speakers that I wouldn't mind checking out one day.

I am enjoying my Fortes and it's nice to have full range speakers back after so many pairs of bookshelves; I really did miss the bass. I have been over to the Klipsch forum, but it's not the same... :p

That Shuguang amp is amazing, but I might try rolling the driver tubes as the Treasure Series output tubes are already gold; or black as it were.

Louis is coming about with a new line of speakers which he told me will have a bookshelf speaker that will have a 98db/w driver, and they will be priced very well.

@ Zitro - if you want to come over some time and hear my new Mini-Torii amp and Omega 3i...we have pretty much finished moving although I still want to do some room treatments.
