momo subs

I have two 12" momo subs, they sound fine for the most part, but while removing them from my car to go to the body shop I tapped on the surround of the speaker. I noticed a 'thump' sound. upon further looking at the sub I noticed that the spider had detatched from the cone. The subs do not sound bad, only if you tap on the cone, or the surround can you hear the noise. I have contacted polk about replacing/ repairing the subs as they are only ~1 year old but they will not honor their warranty because I am unable to find a proof of purchase. Is their anyway to troubleshoot to ensure the VC in undamaged? Also, how can I reattatch the spider to the cone? If I cannot repair the speaker does anyone know of any companies that work on Polk equipment at a reasonable price? Thanks for your help.

Hey Erick, you should either repost this message to the attn of Kim, or send him and email with all the details of what happened. Kim is really helpful in these types of situations.
I believe his email is kjasper@polkaudio.com.

That's what I think you should do.

the spider, contrary to popular belief is not attached to the cone -- well it is.. but its not -- its actually attached to the piston which "floats" in and out of the magnet structure... on smaller speakers the spider is attached to the piston/voice coil assembly so close to the cone that it may actually be glued or stuck or whatever to the cone as well as to the piston... but ultimately -- its the piston.

far as repair -- dude i dunno how the hell u could have beat the tar out of a speaker that badly...

i haven't seen a spider actually rip off its structure like that before -- i would say that it must have been eitehr a) dried out and possibly rotted from improper storage (eitehr by the dealer who sold it or maybe by you -- i dunno) and it just got brittle ... b) you slammed a shitload of power on it immediately with no break in at all (like triple the rms on the day u got it) or c) its just an odd anomalie.

i dunno where u could take it -- i mean there are speaker repair shops -- few but some -- none of which ic an tell u off the top of my head... but you're going to pay a LOT OF MONEY -- the work it takes to disassemble a machine produced mostly glued together speaker is immense and not easy at all .. my guess is it will cost you almost as much to fix the speaker than to buy a new one.

also -- i would NEVER run a sub with a busted spider - so dont even bother finding out if the VC is in working order -- u'll completely kill teh suspension and dynamics of the speaker w/ out the spider.

my recc is scrap it and buy a new one. i'm sorry to give u bad news but its probably wha tyou're gonna have to do.

The subs wasn't beat on bad at all. I just have a cadence Z500 amp rms @ 2 ohms bridged is like 600. I just hate it that I invested the cash in something that I was under the understanding of having such an excellent warranty only to find out its not worth the paper it was wrote on.

Probably not the place to ask this.... but... does anyone know of a speaker manufacturer that TRULEY stands behind their product?

Thanks for your helps guys. I appreciate the prompt replies and advice I have received.

Seriously you need to do what I said before. Kim helped me get replaced my momo for me when I cracked the cone on it. You should really talk to him before you go spending money on anything else.

dude CALL polk -- just call them up at the baltimore office and ask for kim -- if u get his voice mail, press 0 and ask for him again, and again and again and again until u get him -- and then nicely ask him if he can help you out -- if he can good -- if he can't -- u're stuck.

polk actually does stand behind their warranty, but in order to do so you do NEED to show proof of purchase.

the momo 12 can take more than 600 watts -- and if that is all that you put on it and u did kind of give it an easy playing for the first week or so, then i would honestly say that upon inspection of the woofer they'll tell u something like "well just looks like a fluke accident, we're replacing it for you"... damn things have a 3 year warranty.

if it is a new sytle momo they shouldnt give u grief at all - they have not been out for three years yet! so u couldn't have gone beyond warranty period -- unless they're buggin cuz they want to make sure u didn't get it on ebay...

morally i believe a MFG should honor warranty regardless of where u bought the item from pursuant to you only having bought something new in original packaging that was unopened. there are even legal battles going on as we speak to make something similar to what i just said a federal law -- but that'll take 20 years before it comes about most liekly.

anyway -- good luck with this -- and if u ever get sick of current model polk -- www.imagedynamicsusa.com (since you asked).

but dont be discouraged by polk -- just work it out with them. any company is going to want u to show proof of pruchase --

where did u buy them??? if its circuit city or somethign u shoudl be able to go there and say "hey i'm john smith and i bougt a momo from u guys 8 months ago or around that time and i need to get a re-printed copy of my receipt" -- or crutchfield -- tell them the same thing -- and they would give u a copy in about 5 minutes dude.

if you ebay-ed them -- tha'ts your tough luck -- that's the risk you take on ebay -- NOTHING is under warranty unless you're buddy buddy with the guys at the company.
