Out for my morning run and I see a couple of large speakers among a pile of trash for pickup. I stopped to investigate on the way home and they turn out to be JVC SK-1000's. I'm in to vintage gear, so I run back to the house and get a dolly to lug them back. Still don't know if they work cause I had to get to work. They are very heavy. Drivers appear to be intact, no dry rot at first glance. Anxious to see if they work at all, since they were tossed out....

Anyone have any experience with this model?

    No... but...

JVC (Japan Victor Corp), like most of the Japanese electronics manufacturers, over the years made some very high quality speakers and speaker components (rarely seen outside of Asia) and some real junk. The mainstream Japanese manufacturers (in the 1960s and 70s) tended to copy old-line high-end US hardware (Altec Lansing, JBL, Western Electric, etc.); JVC (also known early on in the US under the names "Nivico" and "Delmonico", if you're interested), being related in some way (presumably pre-WWII) to RCA Victor, modeled speaker components on some of the outstanding early RCA hardware (e.g., the near legendary and very collectible RCA LC-1 coaxial loudspeaker). They also made plenty of "big box" speakers of little or no interest, and at least one nice planar tweeter (in the mid-1980s).
Good info on Japanese components at http://audio-heritage.jp/VICTOR/index.html (this is a link to the "Victor" page; yeah, it's in Japanese but the pictures are in English!)

    HTH, as they say.

EDIT: I dont' see an SK-1000... but I do see an SX-1000 three way with dome MR and tweeter that looks pretty nice...

:) - had just enough time after running to plunk them down on a couple of 2x4s in the garage before leaving the house. Seems we're not done with our summer time tree trimming if my wife still has the cutters out.

Man, she's gonna be surprised to see the pair if she works in the yard today...:o

Looks like you'll need to refoam the woofers, but otherwise looks good. Every year I go around to the yardsales and see what they have for cheap; mostly look for vintage speakers and McIntosh gear. Only done it for a year and didn't find anything good yet. :(

Also vaguely reminiscent of a JBL Monitor from that time period...just a little?

Interesting info above....is that what you consider 'light' reading material? JVC Speaker History, that is.

How do I refoam woofers? I would've assumed they were shot and needed replacement...

Sorry for the lack of updates. I've been real busy and have not even tried out the speakers. I did; however, view them in the light of day and they look kinda rough. Maybe this weekend I can hook em up and see if they crackle :).

I've never found anything good curbside, though I have stopped to check stuff out. It always ended up being Soundesign or Yorx or something like that. I have done pretty well at garage sales and thrift stores, though.
