Something I was thinking of earlier today. If one were to order a pair of acoustic suspension speakers and/or sub that was built at elevation, and shipped to a location at or near sea level, would the difference in air pressure affect its performance? I mean, would I have to loosen the driver and break the seal in order to "equalize" the pressure? Certainly I can't be the only person to have thought of this...am I right? Any thoughts?

They are not sealed airtight. There is some leakage. Lay off the mushroom tea.

Yeah, I think you're the only person that thought of this. You must be a pilot. Best that you do a "weight and balance" on your speakers.

In order for this to be a concern, speakers would have to be absolutely air tight...and no speaker that I've ever heard of is absolutely air tight. They need to be able to draw air into the cabinet in order for the drivers to move.

Even sealed subs aren't actually completely air tight...that just means that they aren't ported.

Funny, yes. However, at the risk of sounding anal, a pilot would not be saying "N one, seven, six, three four out." Instead, they would say "november, one, seven, six, three four out."

Then that would be the first clue that I'm not a pilot...but I play one on the Polk forum.

Mind you, I've only been aware of things like this since my friend became a pilot. Prior to such events, I never would've known the difference.

    What if...

    you're on to something???
A perfectly airtight sub enclosure (with a valve for altitude adjustments)!! Perhaps it would be amazing! :)

Yeah, yeah!!! And you could increase or decrease the pressure to custom tailor the type of sound and/or response to your desire!! Let's get a patent going, shall we? :D

I log barometric pressure and dew point while demoing gear. ;)

Not to mention, it would have to be cryogenically treated to bring out the best sound!!!!

Perhaps we could sell plane rides to the edge of the atmosphere, at which point we'd seal the cabinet... Ultimate tweak!
