Receiver set up help

Great info here for this new member. I have on the way a pair of 70' a 505, and a C2 to pair up with my Yamaha 663 receiver and Mirage Nano Sat rears. My room is 14X26 and we sit 12-14ft from a 60" Sony LCOS. Should I set the Yamaha receiver to large or small speaker and any starting point suggestions on how to set up the 505 up crossover etc.? FWIW,The receiver has the (YPAO) auto sound adjustment system. Thanks much and I can't wait till this stuff gets here to replace my old very inexpensive Polk set up.

    Congrats and welcome to CP!

    Experimentation is the key here, but personally I would start off trying the main speakers set to large and then try your crossover between 80-120. The problem is that your center channel should be able to handle some bass but not your rears so you will have to decide which compromise you prefer, a slightly thinner sounding center or rears with a little more bass than they can handle. Either way will sound very good I think, but just a heads up.

    I would recommend setting the speakers to small and the crossover to 80hz. Then run the calibration and go from there.
    Front - RTiA5's
    Rear - RTiA3's
    Center - CSiA4
    Sub - PSW110

    I'm probably looking at 80% TV watching, 15% standard DVD watching, and 5% Blu-ray watching. My thinking is that even though most all HD broadcasts are in 5.1 it seems that most studios don't spend a great deal of money on producing rear channel sound effects so with that in mind do you think perhaps going large in the 70's and crossover around 100? Any opinions will be welcome. Thanks and thanks for the welcome.

    I would definitely give that a try. I would also try 80 as the crossover and see if that improves center channel clarify and presence.

    I will try that first. Here's another perhaps stupid idea but the receiver is set up for using as a 7.1 system which I've never considered before and Ive heard that it's not worth it if you're watching all 5.1 material. How do you think the system would sound with a pair of Bose 901's (no EQ) for the rears and the Mirage nano sats for the sides? This would take a fair bit of time and effort so I'm just wondering if it's a waste of time.

    I personally wouldn't bother with it, but I have never set up 7.1 so I am not much help. Especially for tv viewing it doesn't seem worth it to me since none of it will be in 7.1, only a select few (but increasing number) of blu ray discs. FWIW, I don't think that matching is as much of a problem with surrounds (others disagree) so if you feel like putting in the extra work and experimenting I would be interested in hearing about the results.

    I'll give it a shot just to see what happens. My problem is that I now have more speakers than I know what to do with. I also have a pair of Bose 101's that I replaced as rears with the Mirage Nano sats. Maybe I 'll sell my 901's and 101's and the current Polk towers and center channel and JBL subwoofer. I'll report back in a couple of weeks when I receive all the new Polk speakers. Thanks again.
