Well...it's been 1 week now since my surgery

Last Tuesday I went under (again!, but that's a long story) to have the rest of my teeth removed and dentures put in.

I can't eat, drink, or talk right.
I have constant pain from dentures rubbing my gums and putting pressure on them while they're healing.
I have dozens of stitches floating around in my mouth when I don't have dentures in.

etc
etc

BUT, I don't have any mouth pains (besides normal healing pain) for the first time in 15 years.

Was it worth it? Only time will tell, but it's gonna be a long and rough road while I heal to see if I can get used to dentures.

Yeah, unfortunately I started work again today. Working at a middle school with new "teeth" and not being able to talk right...should be a blast!

I know a few people who honestly love their decision to get rid of bad and or remaining teeth.

You will heal FAST. The mouth is the fastest healing area of the body...We have to eat don't we.

If you had infections all the time, your energy level will double or more.

I hope all goes well for you. The technology today and in the past 20 yrs. almost makes dentures foolproof with transitions.

Keep looking in the mirror and admiring that new smile and then pass it around.
Most people just listen to music and watch movies. I EXPERIENCE them.

I'm looking into getting (at least the lower) dentures implanted into my jawbone. If I have enough bone structure left (you lose a lot when you have as bad of teeth as I did) to support the implants, I can regain a LOT of my biting power.

As it stands now, i'm on a liquid/soft food diet for the rest of my life. My mouth/gums have deformed over the years so much that the denture can't be made to fit well enough to allow me to chew anything, even with "denture cream" to help it stick.

I'm not too happy about that, but neither am I sad. I had been living off rice and noodles for the 3 months prior to the surgery already, so it isn't a huge change for me at this time.

Hope your recovery goes well. As far as implants go, you might want to look at implants + partials. It's a long drawn out process, but implants are about $2k each.

And if you have any Vicodin left over, send them my way. I'm getting tired of reality:D

I'm actually looking at what's called "implanted dentures". They cut off any excess material from my current dentures and fit those to be mounted.

Since I've already forked out the money for dentures, the added cost won't be much in comparison.

First of all, good luck with your healing. Hopefully it will be quick and uneventful. Also, don't be afraid to try eating more difficult things as time goes on. You might be surprised. I'm a dentist and have made dentures for many patients over the years that had very little bone left after surgery. I, and they, thought they would have a very difficult time mastering the chewing of anything other than very soft foods. But as the months and years went by they sometimes got to the point where they could eat anything they wanted. I could never tell in advance who would master that technique...but that's what can happen. So my advice to you is...don't give up and limit yourself...keep trying...you just might be surprised how well you do. And again, good luck.
