The Oasis of the Seas. Almost a 1/4 mile long at 1,187 ft.. Can carry up to 6,296 passengers plus a crew of 2,165.

Here it is pulling out of the port in Nassau Bahamas.

It's a damn big ship!

Just for a little better perspective of the size, here is a crop of the middle lifeboat and the trash containers (each one loaded on a semi) on the dock...

Ballast. Its about 200 feet wide and actual weight is around 100,000 tons.

I've read that they can list past 45 degrees or more and still recover. I'd be more worried about 1. Food poisoning, 2. Fire, 3. Pirates and Terrorists.

Food poisoning I guess could be an issue...but the kitchens are state of the art...so not likely.

The cruise lines will tell you their number one concern is fire. They take huge precautions to prevent them.

Pirates...not going to happen. Cruise ships have some really sophisticated defense mechanisms to prevent a pirate attack or boarding. A terrorist attack is always possible...but no more likely than say a football stadium or basketball arena. Also it would probably have to be an outside attack and not from within. I spent a fair amount of time talking to a security expert for one of the cruise lines and was amazed at the level of security on these ships.

    Impressive! That things huge!

I agree with Ricardo though. It looks like the designers just tried to give it as large of a capacity as they possibly could, at the expense of aesthetics. Cool bragging rights though.

I agree and generally like the design of the Carnival ships. This is the "little" ship I happened to be on. It ONLY holds 3,653 passengers and 1,389 crew. I THOUGHT it was a huge ship until it was next to the Oasis. Here it is, docked at Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas.

    4614308272_3f593b9094_o.jpg

BTW, If anyone ever wants to go to St. Thomas for a vacation, I can highly recommend the hotel at the upper right hand corner of the picture. It is the Marriott Frenchman's Reef Beach Resort. We've stayed there a couple of times...and it is priced "reasonable"...for a Caribbean hotel.

The Oasis carries 18 lifeboats with a capacity of 370 each (6,660) which is enough for all the passengers plus the crew members to man them. The rest of the crew...will need to seek alternative means of survival.

She may be old, but no steamer has ever rivaled her beauty...

Yes, I know that statement is subject to debate, but in terms of the grandeur and oppulence that went into her construction, she has always been a tough act to follow. It cost more than $100,000,000 to recreate her for a film, and that copy did not have to set sail! To truly bring her back to life would cost somewhere around $700,000,000 today. That upright prow is downright sexy!

The only modern vessel that a fitting comparison could be made would be with the Queen Mary II, which IMHO is the most striking liner in the world today. When her keel was laid, there was speculation that she would be named Titanic II.

In the case of a major disaster it's going to really suck to be one of the low seniority crew members and have to seek "alternative means of survival"

Yeah, I actually misspoke (or mistyped). We sailed out of Baltimore in January and half the passengers on one of the cruise lines were sick with flu-like symptoms. I was referring to that and not food poisoning. Not sure how sophisticated the security mechanisms are, but you wouldn't catch me on any cruise ship in the area of the Somali pirates area of operation. There are just some things I care not to test.

Finally made one longer than a Nimitz class carrier? Most cruise ships could fit under the flight deck overhang of a Nimitz class.

    Length: 1,092 feet (332.85 meters).
Beam: 134 feet (40.84 meters); Flight Deck Width: 252 feet (76.8 meters).
Displacement: Approximately 97,000 tons (87,996.9 metric tons) full load.

I had it in a 4 foot by 6 foot poster. It's rolled up in a tube somewhere with the rest of my junk. It was given to me by one of the Northrup guys I was working with while doing the CVN tests for the AEGIS system on carriers.

Al: I wouldn't worry too much about it. We've been on several ships but none as large as the Dream that we were just on with it's 3,500+ guest capacity. We were a little worried about the size but it wasn't bad at all. If you like the crowds up on the top decks and around the pools with all the "activities" you can certainly do that, but that class of ship has several areas that you can find to get away from the crowds. There are outdoor parts of the ships where you can literally be by yourself at times. I like to find those spots and read on at sea days (I actually read 3 books this last cruise)...since I hate the casinos and they will always find you to sell you a drink. :D

Getting on and off the ship in the ports can be a pain IF you are trying to get off/on at the same time as everybody else (ie: as soon as the gangplank goes down or at the last 30 minutes before it sets sail.).

Also, if you don't mind walking, always take the stairs instead of the elevators. Much faster and you work off some of the mass quantities of food you WILL eat. With that and some snorkling at the islands and a little gym time on the days at sea...I managed to come home and not gain any weight even though I probably ate 2X as much food and drink as normal. I've read the average person gains anywhere from 5-10 lbs on a weeks cruise.

I've been on the Carnival Glory twice and it is very similar to the Splendor. It was a very nice ship. Have a great time on your cruise!
