Bright and early Sat @ 8am my dad, my nephew,my wife and myself started to dig the holes in order to fill them with rocks. We are building a deck. It's 10ft wide and 12 feet long. The deck is done as of today. Just some finishing touches to add along with a railing. (pics to follow) This week Mon-Wed we are tearing out our old porch and making it now 6x8. We are using PT wood for the deck and porch but using cedar for our railings. We will completely move the location of the stairs as well. (again pics will follow as our dig cam is very iffy so I'll need to take them with my BB) We are hoping to get it all or most done for the upcoming weekend as it'
s a long weekend here. Last year the fence this year the deck and some landscaping.

Nice! Enjoy the work, I always do.

My weekend is 3 days long starting today. Tonight, going to see a-ha live. Tomorrow, tinker around the house, watch a few movies. Tuesday, Disneyland all day with friends.

Ron dislikes a film = go out and buy it.
Ron loves a film = don't even rent.

Trust me, that is the plan this coming weekend. Making many pitchers of Margs and will sit in the sun on our new deck.

It's funny, the days leading up to the work I hate it as I'm not a huge fan of construction work until I see it coming along. Now I look out and see the work that we have done and think "wow, good job". Monday to Wed we will work on the porch. This needs to be completed asap as it's the only way the dogs can get to the backyard. They won't have stairs for a couple days. Tonight I'll see if my dig cam will cooperate if not I'll take some with my BB.

Ron sounds like you are in for a great time the next couple days. Enjoy, as those are the moments people should remember!

Some pics, it's not 100% complete. I still need to add the super privacy lattice around the porch down to the ground and put a door in there so we can store some stuff. Put some the same type of lattice around the base of the deck to the ground again to preven rodents and such to get under there. There will be a railing on the deck just like on the porch from the fence side all the way to the edge. Caps on the posts which will be black solar lights and also the railings on the stairs. In one pic you will see Willow just taking a nap, the other is my wife (blurred the face). I also need to install a 1x4 or so on the tops of the railings to finish it off and allow a place to set drinks or what not on them, currently they are to narrow. The 4x4 in the first pic are just there in the mean time so Rudy does not go under the deck. That will as mentioned above be covered by the super privacy lattice.

This is a pic of a neighbours deck as to what ours was before. Very similar.

Nice work bro! Does the deck go all the way up against the house? I almost wouldn't put a rail around the deck. Add a smallish bed around the deck and leave that thing open to the rest of the yard. Maybe it's just me but I love that big open feel to a backyard. Great job either way.

Looks good. I'm curious though, you dug holes and filled with rock? How deep are the holes? Here we need to go down below frost line(close to 4') and I poured concrete piers to set the posts onto.
We built our deck(12X24) last spring....I'm hoping to finally get it stained/sealed this week.
edbert, I'm with ya...no railings. Fun to sit on the edge and dangle my legs while enjoying an enhanced beverage or 2!

Are those supports cantilevered into the house?

No as we have a huge window in the basment (where fam.rm is). We are not 100% sure about the railing yet. It would give it an extra finish look. We are going to leave as is for now and try it out.

The holes are 2 feet deep, the first 6inches are soil the rest is nasty a$$ clay, then filled with small stones which were tapped in along the way. Around here we can use just those pyramid shape concrete blocks which are about a foot high to build decks on if we choose. Our fence posts were 4' deep. We will not be staining ours leaving it as is, too much work.

Yes they are, that's what the builder had put in and the old deck was on before. We just moved the stairs to the other right side going down to the deck and made the porch 1.5 feet longer and 2 feet wider.

Ah, I see that now. Can't wait to see it with the lattice to close in the porch underneath.

We will put some big planters back there at the edge of the deck so no one pushes their chairs off deck and down in to the window.
