i am curently running a mirage bps150i .....im putting all my components in the closet out of sight running cables in wall and floor etc......because i have a big dinosaur of a subwoofer i was seriously thinking about putting it in the closet ....leaving some space around it....My question is would this be detrimental to the sound of my bass ....will low frequencies still sound good in a closet.....and if i run a receiver (onkyo707) with auddessy will that take care of it...along with some tweaking of the sub

Well, try it out see if you like the sound. I would personally wire a fan on the back where the amp is just because it is a colset and there really is not much criculation or whatnot. I mean. Trail and errors. Be the first man to put his sub in a closet.
If it sounds great you may have us all doing it (I would probably stuff mine in there as well if i had room fore it.
    But, no really.
Try it out see how it sounds....only problem I could see is if you have a cheap door the door may rattle other than it could be good?

If you leave the door open, some sound will transfer into the listening room but overall, your sound will be cut down in output and the quality will get boomy. It's like listening to a car stereo when it's in the car next to you. It's not tight and responsive, just boomy and thunderous yet nowhere near as loud as the owner's car. Same principles.

I can't imagine that sounding good.

Yep, placement is crucial and the closet is definitely poor placement. I think Toxis is right with the car comparision.

    Cheers!

Yeah, one of the factors in getting good bass from a sub is how well it can pressurize the room its in, if its in a closet, even with the door open its not going to do that very well. Also, depending on how low the sub goes, some sub bass is meant to be felt, since it can't be heard below a certain freq.

I suppose that if you really wanted to, you could cut a hole in the wall for the sub and put the bulk of it in the closet, but that might not work depending on the design of the sub (any passive radiators or ports?). Or maybe you might consider getting an in-wall or in floor sub. Heck if you're building the room from scratch, build-in a place/nook for it.

it's best if it comes out of the closet. There has to be a way to have it sit in the room.
