Hi guys,

My first pair of Polks, picked up on the 'Bay this afternoon for the grand price of £10.50. Look very tidy to me, any ideas on spec? Frequency response, power handling etc.

Thanks

Mat

30hz, but at what level? Notice that the -3dB level is at 48Hz. Don't expect deep bass from 5Jr, or even the original Monitor 5. They just don't have it. Nice sounding speakers though. 5's with Peerless were my first foray into vintage Polk sound.

You will not get anything close to 30Hz out of the 5Jr's and even 48Hz is more realistic if you are in a small room. Nice snag though and Welcome.

Even so, Monitor 5's are full-range loudspeakers. For music, there's no need for a subwoofer. If you want to use as an HT, get a high-quality subwoofer... perhaps a Velodyne. There's very little music that'll extend below 50hz.

You won't get anywhere near 30hz out of those 5Jr's. As Brock mentioned above, 48hz or so would be more realistic in a small room. My Monitor 7A's can dig down to around 40hz or so with usable output in my 15' x 18' listening room. Much lower than that though, and they run out of steam.

That said, they are some great sounding speakers. The vintage Monitors have some of the best midrange and high end(especially models with the Peerless tweeters) I've ever heard...but they don't have any real deep low end to speak of. Nice and punchy in the upper bass registers though.

They're not exactly "full range"...seeing as they can't cover the full audible spectrum, or even close to it. The human ear can hear down to about 20hz...and at a 48hz(roughly)-3 db point...you're missing the last octave and half or so of audible bass. The vintage Monitors definitely do have some impressive low end response given their size and design...but they aren't full range by any means.

Not needing a sub with them is kind of personal opinion...their bass output wouldn't satisfy everyone. Even my Monitor 7's are a bit light in the low end department for my tastes. Generally, they're good enough to make me happy, but I turn the sub on sometimes. Monitor 5Jr's aren't going to have a whole lot of low end, and for many listeners a sub may be desirable.

And I don't know what kind of music you're listening to, but I've got plenty of music that extends well below 50hz.
