last years yamaha 665, i have one.. retailed for 499 but as the new avrs start to come out you should be able to find it for even cheaper.. it has HDMI and the new HD audio codecs..
There aren't many brand new avrs that have pre-outs. it sometimes can be a little bright with music with the 60's but is great for HT it is also 7.2 so you can use two subs and 7 channels.

** if you don't need the HDMI however you might want to try used on Audiogon you should be able to find a pretty high quality surround sound processor on there for the price range you are looking for with pre outs**

Try the latest or last years Denon 28XX series or you may find a 3808 in that price range.

Check out 6thave.com, ignore the site prices. Call them about whatever you are interested in and tell them you are a member of AVSFORUM.

I am big Harman kardon fan. They tend has a nice warm sound that will go well with those monitors. There are refurbs all the time direct from hk on ebay. I would try to get an avr 354. 7 channels of good high current power, 3 1.3 hdmi inputs, and preouts to add power if you feel you need to later. You should be able to get one under 400 bones. Also I think that accessories4less.com has an refurb onkyo 707 that has everything you want for 500 or 600, cant remember for sure. I would also check that out.

    Peace,
    Paul

I haven't heard that particular yamaha but I have heard several older models. While I am a fan of yamaha's higher end models ( I had an rx-v1500 that I loved) the lower end models tend to be bright sounding and they are not known for have good bass definition and weight. Plus those newer models have been gutted, just look at the weight. I wouldn't trust the wattage specs because of that. But that's just me. Other people probably own that model with monitors and can give first-hand feedback.

    Peace.

hopefully someone with experience of these actual receivers will chime in. I think that you would really like either receiver, but I would go with the onkyo since it is thx select 2 certified which means that it can carry a 3.2 ohm load which I realy doubt that the yamaha can. But if you are planning on adding more power that does not matter as much. The onkyo also has more hdmi inputs which is nice. And as far as the bass goes I have the same sub (love it) and the bass has more definition and weight with my HK than it did with the yamaha, especially in pure 2 channel. Hope that helps.

    Peace.

I think the yammy drives the 60's well I was using its amps for the mains for awhile before i got the external amp.. both the yammy and Onk are probably comparable, but with the Onk being THX certified it can handle bigger loads than the yammy for sure.. but both have plenty of power for the 60s if you're using the typical 80hz cutoff for bass. if you can listen to either of them nearby at all that would be your best option but you'd probably be fine with either one.

I also like Onkyo's and have an 806 myself. The 707 is another option as well, it is on sale at Vanns.com for $624.88 w/ free ground shipping. Not sure if it is new in box, or refurb but you could always call and ask. If it is new, that is a steal!!
