New Receiver

I've been looking at these three receivers for my VM series speakers (the rears are RM's).

Marantz SR6004:

Onkyo 807: http://www.accessories4less.com/make-a-store/item/ONKTXNR807/Onkyo/TX-NR807-THX-Select2-Plus-Certified-7.2-Channel-Network-Receiver/1.html

Pioneer 23THX:

I currently have a SR6001 hooked up to my VM's, and I'm not sure if these will be an improvement or not. The SR6001 is a great receiver and having the latest codec's isn't important to me, since my PS3 decodes the audio for me. My plan is to move the SR6001 to my JBL N series speakers and connect the new one to my VM's.

Instead of spending the money on a new receiver, I thought about getting a second SVS NSD cylinder sub for duals subs or the VM10's for my rears.

Thoughts? Thanks in advance.

I called Value Electronic's this afternoon and if I can talk the wife into letting me spend a little more, I might jump to the SC-25. The internet radio feature on the SC-25 and 807 interests me more than the SR6004's bluetooth.

Do you have an amp? That might be a better investment than a new receiver.

You must have been reading my mind, because I was just on the Emotiva website looking at the XPA-3 and the XPA-5. Not sure which one is better for me. Will a 200 per channel amp kill my 150 watt max VM30's?

No, you will have more headroom.

Are your married to buying new ?

There are some fantastic bargains out there on used gear. Might find tubes are your thing.

Nope, not married on new gear. I've been searching videogon.com, but to be honest I don't know what to look for in an amp.

I bought a used Sunfire Cinema Grand (200W x 5) that is awesome.

Audiogon always has a lot of them for sale, such as this one: http://www.audiogon.com/cgi-bin/cls.pl?ampsmult&1278693525&/Sunfire-theater-grand-5-channe

From personal experience, I found that the new amp made my system sound much better than a new AVR. The AVR you have right now is a good one. Unless you are looking for the latest bells and whistles, I would go amp over AVR. Just my $0.02!

That's a great deal for that Sunfire. I'm still going back and forth on the amp and new avr. If I get a new avr, it will replace the sr6001 in the basement and the sr6001 will replace my kenwood VR-6060, which is outdated. The kenwood works fine, but it doesn't have any hdmi inputs. Right now, my PS3 is hooked up to it via digital coax (I bought a fiber optic to coax converter).

You would be much better served with a new amp That Sunfire or the Emotiva XPA 5 would allow your speakers to operate to thier full potential. It is the single best improvement I have made to my system.

It all depends on what you consider will be the biggest benefit to you. Good luck.

If I go the 5 channel amp route, I will more than likely have to upgrade my rear speakers since they are 100 watt RM6751's. Correct?

I would not worry about the watt ratings of the speaker so much. It is far more damaging to a speaker to underpower them. I have yet to see a speaker fail from too much juice.

I think I'm going to go the amp route, but I won't buy one until I can find a place to put it. I had to take my audio stand down when I bought my SVS sub.

    Thanks again for everyone's help.

If you go the sunfire route, make sure you double check the amp size. Sunfire's come in 17" and 19" versions. When I got mine, I didn't check the size and ended up with a 19" which still works great, but doesn't fit very well in standard racks.

I moved the Marantz SR6001 to my JBL N Series speakers this past weekend and I'm looking at getting the a new avr or getting the SR4003 or SR5004 from a4l and an amp (emotiva or sunfire) for my VM series speakers (Kenwood VR-6060 is currently hooked up to the vm's). The wife said she'd rather have the avr, but I'm thinking about going to amp route, for roughly the same amount of money. If I don't go the amp route, I'm looking at the Onkyo 807, Marantz SR6004 and the Pioneer Elite SC-25.
