Well, there goes the audio budget . . .

. . . my eldest had all 4 wisdom teeth removed about 3 years ago. Now we've been advised the remaining 3 all need all 4 etracted.

I've scheduled them for the end of this month, the end of June and the end of August . . . at $1,700 per mouthful !!!!!

The oral surgeon said he would offer a substantial discount on the August visit, but this still seems like way to much money for 45 minutes per patient in the office.

Am I being overcharged. Any comparative numbers out there?

    No dental insurance?

For 4 extractions, that sounds within normal limits, to be honest.

Are they impacted or anything? This would be high if they're just flesh removals. But for bony impacted wisdom teeth, that seems about in line with the claims i see all the time.

I would say being grossly overcharged. I had two yanked in California and it cost me about 200 bucks a tooth and it was done by the dentist. I suppose there are other circumstances where it may cost more, and an oral surgeon may be the reason why.

I'm self-employed and have no dental insurance, but the top 2 wisdom teeth are classified "Complete Bony Extraction" which may allow for medical insurance to kick in a bit.

The bottoms are $237 each, tops are $424 each, anesthetic $366 and antibiotic $34.

Instead of going to an oral surgeon, shop around for regular dentists that do it. Seems like mine was substantially cheaper...but its been a while, so I'm not sure.

Yep. That's certainly in line through an oral surgeon. :(

I just had mine done about 6 to 7 weeks ago. With my insuance I still had to pay about 280 bucks out of pocket. I did not have any impacted so the dentist just gave me alot of novicane and yanked them out. If the teeth are impacted it will need to be done by an oral surgeon and will cost alot more.

Oh well, $1700 X 3 over the next 4 months less whatever pittance my insurance covers definitely will not be spent on audio gear, a vacation, or other things our shrinking disposable income gets spent on :( .

Wisdom teeth can be very difficult to get out. Especially if they are impacted, hence the surgeon. All 4 of mine were, so the Dr knocked me out & took all of them.

What was supposed to be a 45 minute procedure turned into 1hr+ since the bottom ones didn't want to come out. I still have slight craters where they used to be!

The money sounds about right to me.

Yup this will need a dental surgeon to ensure safety:

    1. Complete Bony Impaction when the wisdom teeth are completely covered in bone. When the tooth is completly covered with bone it will remain completly covered with its "developmental sack" in which all teeth develop. Later in life, this sack may undergo changes and enlarge and develop ionto a cyst. This cyst will enlarge at the expense of the bone of the jaw. These cysts should be removed and and examined by a pathologist.

No, seriously, don't do all three kids at once. They may not ever have problems. My Son is 28 and the Navy just now pulled out the 3 remaining teeth. One was causing problems. Just because. It didn't cost him anything so he agreed. I had my remaining 2 wisdoms done at age 50. Bite problems.
The Dentist must be upgrading his audio system :D
