A tad aggressive with the volume knob...

...on my 1Cs last night. Had the pre close to noon and heard one of my 6511s making a farting noise (the lower driver handling more bass). Examined it and it seemed to be pushing more air than the other speakers. I recently Mortited these speakers so I know the seal is good. Backed off the volume and everything came correct, but I'm wondering if this MW is starting to go. Doesn't look to have a tear in the surround. Any thoughts?

Combo rig:

SDA 1C, CS400i, SDA 2B

Maybe it's time to recap your amps?

That's on the to do list, but why just one of the drivers?

Farting noise and reduced bass from one driver sure would make me suspect an air leak (or perhaps some other mechanical problem) at that driver.

The 6511s are wired in series, an electrical fault with one should affect the other the same way.

Ron, is it an original or newer 6511?

I guess I'll pop the driver and check the seal and connection. There was definitely more air being pushed and that could be a leak.

It's an original...might be a replacement I picked up from Polk65. I did have one go bad a few years ago.

Hmm, not sure then. I had a newer 6511 I got from Polk that would get overloaded easily when you pushed it with somewhat high dB levels. If it's an original it may be time to replace it. Does it still move freely without any rubbing at all?

I just popped it and can see nothing wrong. I must have been pushing it pretty hard last night. I'm at 9AM on the dial right now and am measuring 90dbs at 3M...no issue and it sounds pretty loud to me (now). I was probably in the 105db plus range...sounded good :D, until the farting. I think I had the single malt itch going a bit too much. Wife's out of town visiting some of our kids in San Diego.

No DUI possible here...having a home office makes my commute negligible :p. Oh, you mean back off the MV .

Before I broke out the Luxman 2 channel pre, I was listening to Porcupine Trees new DVD in MCH at reference level, so naturally I was used to LOUD when I changed over.

I've been around, just not posting much. I've been very busy and it's been important stuff, so I don't chime in unless my interest is really peaked...or I have a problem ;).

If by pushing more air, you mean it's moving in & out more than the others at a given volume, then my guess is you've melted a portion of the voice coil. This makes the overall impedance of that speaker lower & requires more current from your amp. I would check the impedance of that individual driver against the others for any variation.
