Sure at that point it would be time for the biggest loser. Luckily that obese is around 1 percent of the population. The majority especially teens can get in shape if they HAD to.

Boot camp should beat it out of them. I remember a buddy of mine was losing 3-4 lbs a week on a ~10K/day calorie diet during marine boot.
There is no genuine justice in any scheme of feeding and coddling the loafer whose only ponderable energies are devoted wholly to reproduction. Nine-tenths of the rights he bellows for are really privileges and he does nothing to deserve them. We not only acquired a vast population of morons, we have inculcated all morons, old or young, with the doctrine that the decent and industrious people of the country are bound to support them for all time.-Menkin

Mumbo jumbo! When I was younger and played football for many, many years, I would go from 185 lbs to 235 for football season and it was muscle with a little belly. After the season was over, I would get back down to 185 to 190. When you are young even into your late thirty's it isn't that hard to bulk up and loose. It's when you turn that corner to 40 and 50 that the lbs don't shed as easily.

Yes...Obesity is a HUGE problem here.

The main problem lies in the fact that American portions are ridiculously large. Go to nearly any other country in the world, and the size of a meal is going to be half the size of an American meal.

I always remember one time that I was eating at a Ryan's(buffet place). My girlfriend and I had just come in, and a few minutes later another group came in and sat near us. The "Mom" of the family was huge...had to have been 550 pounds at least. She was so large that she couldn't even fit in the booth, and had to use a chair at the end of the table.

She couldn't even get up to get her own food...her family was bringing her food to her. She proceeded to shovel down plate after plate of food, and it was all the unhealthiest stuff they had. I didn't see her eat a single fruit or vegetable. She was still going to town when we left.

It made me lose my appetite...It's absolutely disgusting seeing how some people abuse their bodies. I'm not the skinniest person in the world either...I'm 5'7" and I weigh about 220 pounds...I've got a bit of a gut, but I'm also in good physical shape, and I'm able to put in a MUCH harder days work than the average person. This lady didn't look like she ever did so much as lift a finger.

Probably. I'd imagine she was probably still there shoveling it down for a solid half hour after we left.

Probably had a good 3-4 helpings of dessert...stopped at the store on the way home for some snacks for later on too.

By "snacks", I mean a tub of ice cream a gallon of chocolate milk and a couple boxes of cookies, of course...probably a couple boxes of Little Debbie's too, just in case she woke up and got hungry in the middle of the night...lol

Some people in the world are starving themselves to death while others are eating themselves to death.

I always wondered about the concept of the buffet. Now, I've participated in my share in the past but when you actually step back and think about it: is food really meant to be consumed on that level?

Well, with regards to America and weight the biggest shocker to me (reverse culture shock in a way) is setting foot in the first American airport on the way home after an extended stay in Asia. Can any other people who've stayed in Asia for an extended period attest to this?

Its like coming to a different world. But the Chinese are increasingly falling under the sway of American cultural hegemony and along with rising incomes are producing a new generation of porkers. In fact, in China I've heard that they have begun organizing a number of fat camps. That said, when it comes to putting on the pounds America still takes the cake, so to speak.

If we really want to conquer the Chinese we should exercise our 'soft' power (a whole new meaning of the word here), continue expanding Pizza Huts and Mickee Dees, 711s, and the killer of killers -- addiction to soda pop. That will prime them for accepting the Snuggy and Crocs as acceptable accoutrements of 'modern casual'...at least we'll be on level playing field. The Brits tried with much success to redress trade imbalances with China 200 years ago through the import of Opium, but in this brave new world I think an addiction to fast food and expanding waist lines should do the trick.

    Good points.

I agree that the concept of a buffet is kind of ridiculous. It encourages you to come in and "stuff your face"...all you can eat!!! That is a bad thing. You don't want to eat until you can't physically eat anymore, and you're getting up groaning because you're so full.

You mentioned the widespread addiction to soda, which is one of the main contributors. People in America drink WAAAAAY too much soda. It used to be that soda was a treat...now it's just the bar standard drink for most people.

I find it incredible sometimes when I go grocery shopping, you'll see people go up to the register with 4 cases of pop, but not a single bottle of juice or anything like that...no milk(aside from maybe for cooking). Pop is absolutely terrible for you. I rarely drink it, aside from when I'm eating out. I never keep it in the house.

It's incredible how many people simply DON'T drink water. They don't like it because it "doesn't taste good". I don't understand that way of thinking. It tastes like...water...basically nothing. How does it not taste good?

Just how terrible soda is, can be shown by the fact that you can use Coke to strip the rust off metal, completely dissolve a penny over time and use it for a number of other cleaning purposes. If it can dissolve metal, what do you think it's doing to your teeth and body? Nothing good...I can tell you that much.

As some of you know, I own and operate a tree service for a living. We associate with several of the other local tree services, and it amazes me sometimes. My brother and I are the only employees of our company, and during the summer we'll each go through a gallon of water a day. We also buy the powdered Gatorade mix, and mix up a gallon a day to split.

One of the other local tree companies buys a case of pop every day for their workers to drink...and the employees are always complaining about being really hot, and complaining about "that summer heat dehydrating you". Yes, it will dehydrate you...drinking pop just further dehydrates you. Yes, it's getting your mouth wet...but it's not quenching your thirst in the slightest bit...it's just making you thirstier.

Why anyone would want to drink pop all day while working out in the sun is completely beyond me.

Ok, in post #10, the picture of the guy on the right, why in the world would you try to enlist,if that is what he's doing, when your that overweight ? Aside from that, drinking pop, eating at buffets, portion sizes....it's called freedom of choice gents. You want to kill yourself early, help yourself to the 2nd and 3rd helping at the buffet. I'll leave out any medical problems that may create obesity as a disclaimer but it comes down to choice, how we use it differs greatly. I will also go out on a limb here and say these obese people who want to join the armed forces are hopeing that they either get a desk job or want Uncle Sam to take care of them for the forseeable future.

I couldn't agree more...and in fact...that's close to my own weight range? I also used to think that I'd never drop back down to my lower weight but 9 months in China and 37 lbs later.....guess what? And I'm in that hard to lose age group now. The SECRET.....portion control and almost no desserts! Main carbohydrates = rice or noodles in 'reasonable' portions.

Buffet's...not happening. Though Norm is quite right about the Chinese situation below. There are some fat Boys and Girls beginning to show up...but NOWHERE near what you would see in the U.S.--at least NOT YET!!

Curt, you're too 'damned' healthy! Stop that and get some fried chicken and some corn bread!

She probably had a "thyroid" problem too. That is what my ex wife had. She was never more than 5-7 lbs over weight but it was still enough to divorce her. :D
