Hello everyone. Hope all is well throughout Polkland. Last night I was listening to some tunes and I noticed a scratchy sound whenever a part of the music would come on that was bass-heavy out of my right SDA-1C. I immediately checked the drivers and sure enough the upper outside mid-woofer was scratchy and rough sounding when I pushed the cone in with my hand.

I have a set of RTA-12Bs lying around, so I pulled a midwoofer out of one of them thinking they were probably the same driver, but they are not. The RTA-12B midwoofer was a 6503 while the SDA-1C midwoofer is a 6511. I went ahead and installed the 6503 in the SDA-1C as a temporary replacement, and honestly, I can't tell any difference in sound (or looks for that matter)at all. Having said that, I want to keep everything uniform so I would like to find a replacement 6511 MW. Those anybody here on the board have a spair 6511 MW lying around that they would sell me? If not, does anybody know where I can find a replacement 6511 MW? I'm not sure if Polk still sells replacement 6511 MWs or not. I'll call tomorrow and ask if I don't get any other leads before then. Thanks in advance.

those are rare and hard to find. The new ones you get from Polk just don't look the same. I have had to do the same with my 2.3's and with the same result. Eventually I found a 6511 on -e-bay. I am pretty sure the ohms are the same on the 6503 and 6511, but apparently are not the exact same speaker.

They come up on ebay ever so often but for the price and potential damage from shipping if the seller has no idea you might as well buy from POlk.

I have 2 of each as spares, a good idea for anyone who plans to keep them.

Why? Is it common for these MW's to blow?

The magnets shift and cause scratching or total freezing of the voice coil. Cement them in place with JB Weld or similar epoxy type cement and the magnets will stay put !;)

    gdb,

Great tip. I was thinking about JB welding and dynamatting the drivers anyways when I do my crossover upgrades, so I will look into doing this. Looks like I'm going to need to contact Polk. Thanks for the replys everybody.
