A black lab mix named Sidney!!

Shes pretty flippin awesome but is only 10 weeks old...

Right now she is laying beside me asleep in a kennel...

But she has to go out every hour or so..

The ultimate goal is kennel train her...

Tomorrow I am going to buy a small fence setup to where her kennel will be placed out there with her so she can go in and out of it all day and ultimately rest there - not urinate and **** in it all the time... and give her shelter...

And when I am home the kennel and her will come inside and all that fun stuff...

My main question here is has anyone kennel trained before and have any tips? I read up online and what I am doing right now seems to be the best option...

Dog is absolutely enthralled with me at this point though - does not want me to leave her side..

First off Trey where the hell are the pictures? LOL!

I have a black lab/border collie mix. By "kennel" training do you mean "cage" training? IF so that is how I raised my Moose from when he was six weeks old. The cage gave him a sense of a den which he found to be his safe place and never made a mess in it unless of course I got stuck at work for 12 hours then he would go to the furtherest corner of the cage and do his duty there when he was very young and hadn't learned how to hold it. Of course 12 hours of holding is way to much to expect. I use to leave work at lunch time to let him out when I knew I was going to be long at work. He now is 9 years old and still will from time to time go under an end table or behind the couch table to get a sense of security. When there is thunder or fire works he runs and hides under an end table or in our little bathroom but most time when that is happening he's glued to my leg, LOL!

Cage training is also good for discipline. If she makes a mess inside, you can sternly say "no" and place her in the cage. Moose got the idea right away and learned to tell us when he needs to go out to take care of business. I've also used it to discipline him for chewing on live AC cords, that is until the cord bit him back one day and he never went near a cord again LOL!

One other thing, never feed her in the cage. Feed her where you eat. If you feed her in the cage it will confuse her.

Lab mixes are awesome dogs, very loyal, very, very intelligent, very loving and love to play. They also hate to be left alone.

    Very good advice -- thanks...

    Pics will follow...

The dog will definitely not be left unsupervised in the house -- and I keep reading that at her current age she is way to young to be left alone in a kennel when someone is not actively watching her - hence my outdoor kennel/fence combo...

Yes indeed she's very young and needs the comfort of mommy no matter what form that may come.

so true, which brings up another point. everyone in the household needs to be on the same page as far as kennel training goes. my wife felt "sorry" for our pup being in the cage and let him out before she left for work. I came home from work to find he chewed through the stucco, through the drywall and gnawed on the wall stud! what a mess that was! puppies get separation anxiety which = chewing.
oh, and congrats on the new pup!

Labs are great! Just watch for the chewing phase...our lab (Jake, rest his kind soul) about destroyed the house. Make sure she has plenty of chew toys.

Crate training is a great thing to start early. Make them feel like the crate is a comfortable place, and they'll travel better. IMO, throwing them in the crate as punishment sends the wrong message to them, and they'll associate it with bad behavior.

Crate training worked very well for me with my pit, Buddy. He was comfortable in the cage, and would chill in it with the door open for brief periods throughout the day. He learned to recognize that he was in trouble because the door would be closed. (Basically, no confusion issues with using the crate as a bed, and also as a punishment, as long as discipline was consistently enforced.

I was also able to get him to relax while I was at work by putting a blanket over the crate. It would get dark, and he would go to sleep. Then again, pits can be kinda doofy, so this might not work for your lab...

Couldn't agree more, never use it as punishment, and they'll happily go in there any time you tell them to.

    Hey Trey,

you may want to try this, we had a trainer come over and spend a day with us and the 2 dogs. Back then Rudy wa new to us and he was peeing in the house some times. They told about this and we've been doing it ever since, mind you now he no longer goes in the house. Buy some pure lavender oil put a bit in a squirt bottle fill with water. If she pees or poops in the house, clean it up then spray the lavender mix over the area. It is a natural deoderizer. Also spray it in her crate, that way she will associate the smell of the lavender from her crate to the rest of the house, making her think the whole house is like her crate. Plus your house will smell great all the time.

    Hahaha, she's awesome.

When we bring the camera out Moose shies away by turning his head or drooping his head so as not to have his picture taken. He's so smart I guess he remembers the unpleasantness of the flash and wants no part of it.

That's interesting. We once had a vet tell us that when we catch him doing his business in the house to quickly squirt him in the face with a spray bottle of water. He said that it is the best way to train cats but it also works for dogs too. Never tried the lavender mix trick which makes all the sense in world.

I wouldn't squirt them directly, although Rudy had to have his anal glands drained and while we waited for the app I did quirt his butt a couple times :o
