I agree as this ransom gig is asinine and I have always felt a show of force was the only way to deal with these thugs.

I opened this thread thinking it was a baseball topic. LOL.

I am glad to see the military of different countries take these pirates seriously. We got to stop this from happening.

A few observations of mine. I want to blow them off the map as much as anyone, but . . . Why don’t companies wipe out the Somali Pirates?
    a. Avoid damage to the ship, which is more costly.
    b. Guns onboard and trained personnel require more insurance.
    c. Somali Pirates aren’t violent.
    d. No incentive for crew to fight back because they know they will be treated well and have no interest if the owner pays off the criminals because they are paid wages.

I imagine also Governments don’t want to get involved proactively because it’s tough finding the pirates' little boats in massive oceans logistically, plus the real answer is invading Somalia. Perhaps, allowing the Somalis to be pirates keeps them from the only other choice as terrorists.

I read an news article that indicated that one of the terrorist groups (it's so hard to keep them straight these days!) is slowly invading Samolia and is forcing the pirates into the forests. It seems the terrorists don't like the low moral standards of the pirates

Have any of the hostages ever been physically harmed? Really, I don't know the exact answer, but I have not heard much. The pirates look like they have the potential to be violent, but really its more of a propaganda show. People are afraid of old Russian weapons and bullet belts like they were afraid of a skull and crossbones on a black flag. If the pirates were to actually make a deadly offensive strike, nations involved would have free rights to crush them. The Pirates don't want that to happen. Consequently, they're all show.

That being said, I still condone blowing them off the radar just for breathing.
