I recently joined Club Polk. While I am new to the club I am not new to polkaudio. In the late 80's I purchased a new pair of SDA-1C speakers. They have been an integral part of my 2 channel system (I have no television) until just recently. I had the opportunity to purchase a pair of SDA-SRS speakers for $700. I always wanted a pair of SRS speakers but, I could not afford them when they were new so, I purchased the 1Cs instead. No regrets. I really enjoyed the sound quality of the 1Cs!

The SRS speakers are in fair shape. The drivers visually and audibly appear to be in excellent shape. The grills are in fair shape. These is a small hole in one but, you need to get up close to find it. There is also a dark stain, about 6 inches in diameter, near the bottom of one grill. The wood needs to be cleaned and oiled. The screws attaching the drivers are rusty and need to be replaced.

The seller really did not know what he had. He obtained them from a friend's mother as partial payment for a painting job. Unfortunately, he had them in the garage, by the door, which is probably why the screws are rusted and the wood is weathered. He was trying to power the speakers with an underpowered receiver.

The speakers were listed on Craigslist. When I saw the ad I contacted the seller immediately and made arrangements to see the speakers. It took several days until we could get our schedules in sync. In the meantime, the seller had other inquiries offering him more than the original $700 posting price. He had actually reposted his ad at a higher price.

It is always nice dealing with people of good moral character. Since I contacted him when the price was $700, he said that we would honor that price.

I am not very handy with electrical so I do not think I will be making any major upgrades such as crossover upgrades. I do have one question though. There has been discussion about upgrading tweeters to RDO-194's. Is this something that can be done without a lot of technical skill? To make this upgrade are there other upgrades that need to be made in order to use these tweeters? Will there be a noticible difference in replacing my SRS stock tweeters with the RDO-194's?

While I am in my mid 50's my music of choice is Rock (everything from Jimi Hendrix to Dave Matthews). I recall reading a comment on a prior thread that the poster thought that rock music sounded better on the SRS compared to the 1.2TL. Based on my music preference would I be better off with the stock tweeters? Any additional thoughts?

Sorry for being so long winded on my first post! I will be shorter in future posts.

    Ben,

Do I need to upgrade the crossover in order to reap the benefit of the tweeter upgrade?

The stock XO and the tweeter upgrade are both major improvements. I'll let others chime in with their opinions. IMHO both need to be done to get maximum enjoyment from your speakers.

BUT, you don't HAVE to alter the crossover in order to drop in the new tweeters, right?

I think that is what he is asking. :D

no you don't have to alter the x-overs but I would strongly suggest it.

do the tweets first and let them break in and then do the x-overs some time latter on.

    and welcome.

'The screws attaching the drivers are rusty and need to be replaced."

If you want to save some cash use naval jelly to remove the rust. Remove 2 screws at a time on each driver and tweeter. It's a bit more time consuming but you will save at least 40 bucks. If you don't want to go the naval jelly route, Ace Hardware sells them and Home Depot does not, at least in my area.

Welcome..Very nice speakers you purchased. Even with the cosmetics, they sound like they're in alot better shape than what a few of us had to start with.:(

I hope you gave him an extra 20.00 for still selling them to you when he could've sold them for more AND to someone else. I would've tiped him. I wonder how many would've returned the kind jesture...I wonder..
Most people just listen to music and watch movies. I EXPERIENCE them.

Welcome to CP! Nice find on the speakers. Replacing the tweeters really is easy as pie, I'm not very electrically inclined and I can do it lol. If you can unscrew some screws and disconnect/reconnect a few wires, you should be fine. I have xovers I want to upgrade also, but I'm not confident enough with my ability to do that myself. Enjoy those speakers, i bet even stock they sound phenomenal.
