Preach on xkcd!
We're also stuck with blurry, juddery, slow-panning 24fps movies forever because (thanks to 60fps home video) people associate high framerates with camcorders and cheap sitcoms, and thus think good framerates look 'fake'.

I've never seen so much right in one little spot in the Intarwebs!

Funny. I have often wondered the same thing. I have been looking for a new TV for our bedroom but have actually been shopping for a monitor with a built in TV tuner. Some are less expensive for a higher quality screen.
I know just enough to be dangerous, but don't tell my wife, she thinks I'm a genius. :D

    Pioneer VSX-816
    Monitor 40's - fronts, bi-amped
    Monitor 30's - surrounds
    CS1 - center
    PSW10 - I'll let you guess
Blue Jeans Cable - speaker cable
Daewoo 27 incher - one step up from a console
    Sony Progressive scan DVD
    XBOX

    SOPA since 2008
    Here's my stuff.

If you have a cable box, you don't need a tuner.

True enough. It is more because I am toying with the idea of getting rid of HD cable and going OTA. I could get a separate box and switcher, but the WAF starts decreasing exponentially at that point. Thanks for the reminder though!

This is dumb ..... I dont get it

LCD monitors are crap , Just look at the contrast of them because todays 1080s hit around 3.000.000:1

FYI 24 fps is very smooth and is way better than 60 fps . 24 fps keeps the atmosphere preserved that the director intended

Jumping the 24 fps to 60 fps makes the movie look like a soap opera also it spoils the tension during certain scenes

60 fps looks way more real, we dont live in a 24fps world now do we? what gives the tension and atmosphere is the filters on the camera lenses. i can guess 90% of the lord of the rings (especially the dark parts) were filmed using either a green or grey filter. imo 24fps causes you to lose tons of detail on fast moving scenes, you just cant see all the minute stuff. and just so everyone knows, soap operas are not 60fps, back when CRT was the main display, they still looked like that and CRTs only have a fps of 30 max.

oh and just so you know, movies are filmed using 60fps cameras, if your watching your old dvds in P-SCAN mode, your getting full 60fps.

Not to worry your manufacturers are already envisioning how many times they can get you to upgrade that 1080p. Though HDTV may remain in the 1080i or perhaps get to p on some future programming, Blu-ray players are merely the TIP of a slippery slope UPWARD toward ever finer resolution.

New digital cameras and film equipment are going to raise resolutions way beyond current blu-ray standards and new DISKS (ULTRA-blu-ray)...will be coming your way. When? That depends somewhat on the 'economy'. If we weren't 'receding' we'd be seeing prototypes by now. Blu-ray 3d is just the TIP of an AV Iceberg.

I tend to buy a step behind or so, then keep it until it dies or unless it is severely outdated. My 46" rear projection TV now doesnt even do 720 and is from the mid 90s...haha.

We're upgrading to, more than likely, a Samsung LED around Black Friday this year.

I used to be so bad about this, I was upgrading every time something came out. I've slowed down a ton though and just take it easy.

My boat anchor of a 130lb Sony CRT is going NOWHERE anytime soon. It just doesn't mean that much to me.

Now the sound is a whole other topic!

    That's obvious.

BTW, I have an HD "TV" at home. It's 15+ years old, 19" and is a CRT. It was built by HP, has a .025 dot pitch and is capable of screen resolution higher than my graphics card, which is newer, can provide. But my grpahics card has a TV tuner on it so technically, my 19" HP monitor is an HDTV at least 12 years ahead of "HDTV".
