I like a lot of the cd towers I see but decided I want to build one sense my dad is big in carpentry. "currently in Iraq" I was wondering what kind of nice wood people would recommend and what kind of stain. Also if anyone has any plans I can go by to get started that might be helpful.

I want it to hold cd's and dvd's and be at least 5ft tall and 6ft wide probably can be bigger. Any guidance would be helpful.

Looking to make a CD rack of some kind this summer here. No plans yet.

Mahogany is the wood of choice for me, nice grain, stains even, semi- hard type that works easily. Finish will be varnish with a last final coat of urethane, sprayed.

My preference is cherry. No need to stain it. Use some light blonde shellac and the cherry will change color over time. I've built a coffee table, a dining room table and a stereo cabinet out of cherry and I think they came out pretty good.

I have some pictures but they are a meg and a half each. Is that too big to add to an entry? I also don't know how to do it.

If you are using windows you can scale down the size of the pictures to use on the polk forum. Open the picture in paint and there you can resize them, I usually use the percentage scale and do about 25% of the original size and is usually fine. I have Win 7 and it has a resize icon in paint. I can't remember but I think in other versions you have to go into view or maybe skew in paint to resize?? As for posting the pics in the thread, at the bottom of the reply box there is a Manage Attachments button. Just click on that, use the browse feature to look for the pics and then upload, easy as that:D Just preview the post and they should show up and then you can submit the reply. Hope this helps. I guess I could have just linked the info but I need to practice my typing skills:D

I like your cabinet, did you build it yourself? It looks like a good sensible design.

Yep. I designed and built all three myself.

I used dewaxed blonde shellac ( 1 lb cut). I just made a pad out of cheese cloth wrapped in an old piece of t shirt. The pad was about the size of a ping pong ball. Dipped the pad in the shellac and spread it thinly. Came back in 15 minutes and did it again. By 6 or 7 coats it seemed finished to me. Easy to scrape off shellac if you get drips. Used a brush for the legs and underneath.

As long as you don't put alcohol on the finish, it holds up well. I wouldn't use it for a dining room table however. I used Behlen's rock hard varnish for that.
