Surround Speaker Placement

The way my room is setup makes it very difficult to place the surround speakers in a good spot. I have two options . . . A. they are just about at ear height while standing, and slightly ahead of the listening position on the side walls. Option B. is placing them at the same height on the side walls, the only difference is that they would be way back on the side walls in the corners so that they are actually behind the listening position instead of ahead.

Rule of thumb for 5.1 placement is for your surrounds to be to the side, or side and slightly behind your seating location slightly above ear level while seated. But all rooms are not the same and sometimes we have to do the best we can with what we got. Start out with plenty of speaker wire, and as close as you can to the above starting point, calibrate and see how you like it. If you have some other options open to your particular room, move your speakers there, calibrate and go with what sounds best to you. After you have decided on what you like best cut and dress your wire for a more finished look for permanent use.

The best setup would probably be with the surround speakers on the side wall in the corners, i'm only wondering if this would be bad for the sound. I remember hearing that they're not supposed to be in corners. Just wondering if I should place them in the corners anyway.
