Well we are moving this weekend into the new house (new to us). and it has dawned on me I have done nothing about getting a service set up for the TV.

I have had Dircet TV in the past and liked it, but I have not had it for a couple of years and was wondering what is the current leader in the Sat. TV race.

Thanks again for all your suggestions.

Where is the remote? Where is the $%#$% remote!

If you don't mind shelling out a couple bills, Directv does have an exclusive on the NFL Sunday Ticket.

I have had both Dishnetwork and Directv. To be honest, I would have stayed with Dishnetwork except for the fact that I was not authorized to receive locals for my area, and I just got fed up with the static on the shows I loved, like Scrubs and NFC football.

With both I had satellite recorders that changed the way I watched television, with a small tilt towards Directv, since when you fast forwarded through commercials and realized the show was back on and hit play, it would back up a bit so you didn't miss anything by button-push-lag.

Dishnetwork I believe had a slightly better picture on my system (running S-video switching through my receiver), so if you can get your locals, I'd use them. But you're definitely not disadvantaged by using Directv.

I use Dishnetwork and really like the direction that they are taking with regards to HD programming. WWW.DBSTalk.com has a lot of info about what is going on in the DBS arena. you might want to look at www.dishnetwork.com and find out if your local stations are available, for a lot of people that can be a make or break item.

NFL package is not on my list of wants. I barely watch what is on the networks.

I am looking at 3 TVs, one at least to have the ability to record, and have a digital output, the other two will be standard for the bedrooms.

HD is in my near future, I am lookinig to get a new TV also.

I am outside of Atlanta, both systems offer local channels.

The only HDTV receiver you can use with dishnetwork is their echostar 6000. That is it..no other options.
With directTV you have the option of several different makes..Samsung, Sony, Panasonic etc. Also directTV has HDnet avalilable. And as stated above the local package may or may not be available with dishnetwork.

I am using Dish for the purpose of more HD channels available and the price is a bit cheaper. If you’re into using the PVR functions Direct has Dish beat because they use the TiVo system which is so user friendly that the most technically challenged will have no problems. Another nice feature about the Dish/TiVo combo is that certain units can be hacked and upgraded with more time. Frank is right on about the new Dish 921 system as it will be able to record SD for 180 hours and HD for 25 Hours w/ firewire and DVI outputs. It’s capable of 50 HD channels and will be available by the end of summer.

Would you have to pay for the upgraded 921?

Being lazy here, I am in Atlanta area, if my local channels offer HD, are the "local channels" on Dish HD?

No, you would have to install an antenna to receive your local OTA DTV channels which the 6000 is capable of.

    Here is my setup:

    Echostar 6000 HDTV receiver
    Winegard directional antenna
two Dishnetwork dishes..one for regular programming and one for HDTV
    Channel Master signal amp
    Channel Master antenna rotor

Using the antenna I receive all the Philadelphis HD channels which are CBS, ABC, WB, UPN, PBS, and sometimes NBC.

Using the dish I receive 1 HD HBO and Showtime channel, HD Discovery channel and HD CBS out of N.Y. which was included with my local package.

Tell ya man there is nothing like true HDTV!! It's the next best thing to 3D. Actually looks like it sometimes.

madmax you are correct. What I am receiving is all that is available right now from Dishnetwork. Not sure what is available on DirectTV but it is similar. I am hoping ESPN HD will become available soon...real soon. Also HDnet.

hoosier, check out your local cable co. and see what if anything is available in HD. The only reason I switched from cable to satellite is RCN cable offered nothing in HD.

    Hoosier,

The 921 also contains a HD local tuner, so this would not be an issue. As far as upgrading from another unit. Yes I would think you would have to pay extra for this unit or they may offer a discount to users like they are doing with their current PVR tuners.

    hoosier,
one small consideration that I think worth a ponder is the fact that, if you go with HD DTV, you can install one triple LNB dish, and my understanding is that if you go with Dishnetwork, you have to have two dishes installed. That's what the installer told me, obviously I had a cow for having two dishes when I don't have to. My .02
I am sorry, I have no opinion on the matter. I am sure you do. So, don't mind me, I just want to talk audio and pie.

Dish is coming out with a multi-satellite dish, so you will have one dish I guess.
