set up Pioneer Elite / TSi system

I've been suffering with a Sony Home-Theater-in-a-Box sound system since 1999. I remember buying it, Laser Discs were still in stores, but component video was still a theory. You know the type of garbage I bought. 10W per 5 channels. Speakers with magnets that look like a stack of four dimes. A subwoofer with less bass than my cellphone ringer. But praise Jesus, my hardship and my saving and my delayed gratification have delivered me a brand new* stereo system. Please deliver me the guidance needed to hook up this bad mother hubbard.

Pioneer Elite 23
TSi 500 fronts
RTi4 side and rears
CS20 center
DSW600 sub
PS3 for Blu Ray
Phillips LCD with HDMI and digital coax

The room is 16x20, carpeted, and there's a alcove / bay window type thing in the middle of one side that the electronics sit in. Surrounds and rears will be on heavy metal stands.

Already have some good HDMI, optical, and coax cables. These are my first pro-am speakers, so I don't have anything else. Planning on getting a spool of the 12 gauge shielded speaker wire at Home Depot. Anything I need to be aware of?

* refurbished!

    Monoprice has good/cheap speaker wire. Not high end by any means, but it works for me on the cheap. The setup seems to be very good. Enjoy and welcome to Club Polk!

    +1 on Rodeo's thoughts, Monoprice has good quality cable at a very affordable price. You have done well with your system and I imagine you wil be very happy with it. Any reason for the coax and optical cables? IMHO, the best way to go with all of your connections (assuming the component will allow it) is HDMI. With coax and optical you won't be able to take advantage of the new HD audio, since neither one of them will pass the signal. I have a few kicking around in case of emergency, but haven't needed them yet. Good luck and welcome to Club Polk.

    I had the coax/optical cables lying around, but will shop on monoprice for another HDMI. The PS3 is currently HDMI to tv, but I think I'll re-route that to the receiver, and then to the TV.

    The sub is currently only coming on during low frequency events in movies (like space shuttle launch), and it's hooked up using RCA cable to the LFE input. Need to figure out how to adjust phase control so that the front towers aren't doing most of the bass.

    I can't seem to figure out how to get the DSW600 sub to produce some bass. There's a major loudness issue. I have a shielded digital coax cable running from the elite 23 to the LFE input on the sub, and the receiver is set up to send all sounds below 100hz to only the sub. The sub has low pass set to 100hz. Volume at max, yet the sub is less loud than a dinky 50w sub. Have tried digital and analog RCA cables, have tried all phase control levels on sub. The sub produces bass, but it's very quiet.

    I accidentally pulled the RCA cable out of the receiver while the sub was still on, and that got a big noise out of it, so I know it's good.

    What am I missing other than loudness? I've gone through the receiver settings related to bass and crossover, but perhaps not enough?
