Tell me if there is no way I'm right...
To start this off... 2 things about me:
1) I lost some hearing this year, so unfortunately, I can't say my ears are 100% accurate any more. That's just a preface, but something that is a reality
2) My HT room is 13X18, closed.
My equipment: Pioneer VSX-21THX, LG BD player, and a 7.3 surround set-up using Polk RM 6750.
Now, bare with me while I explain the ".3". I have an Energy sub running off an LFE cable set for 80Hz. The other 2 subs are Polk PSW10's. The are wired 'speaker level" to the front L/R and the Center channels. I did it this way to give my small RM6750's a little more low end.
Okay... now to the part where I need evaluation. Sometimes I think the dialog sounds a bit boomy --- I think it's coming from the PSW10 wired to the center channel. It isn't horrible... but I think there are probably some sound forces at work (such as directionality) that I can't control. That PSW 10 is handling the lows from the 80 up to the 100Hz range.
I have this pair of RT5 bookshelf speakers. I began to wonder: Should I acquire a vintage center channel and pair it with the bookshelves? I posted about the center channel (CS250s) and have gotten some responses (which have been great).
So, I dragged out the RT5's and hooked them up to the set-up in the HT room. Much to my surprise, I can't really tell a huge difference between the RT5's and the RM6750 L/R speakers. I even wired the RT5's speaker level to the PSW10 sub that the RM6750 L/R speakers are normally wired to...
And there isn't a shocking or massive difference.
In fact, it almost sounds like the RT5's are a little too treblely (if that's a word)... maybe almost as if they are screaming a little too much.
I spent half an hour hooking and un-hooking the RMs and the RTs... each time listening the intro song to the Pacific. And I just can tell a glaring difference.
So, am I merely wasting my time looking for (and buying) a vintage center channel like the CS250s to match my RT5 bookshelf speakers (and, in turn using them in place of the current RM speakers that I have)??????
Is it possible for the little RM6750 speakers to put comparable sound to the significantly larger RT5 bookshelf speakers??????
Do you think that if I had a bigger center channel, that the RT5's would sing and sound much better (i.e., is the current RM6750 center holding it back)???
I would really appreciate some insights!!!!!!!!!
