Flea Market Score!!

While browsing at a local flea market today I spotted two vintage turntables underneath and behind some other stuff. The first is a Technics SL-D2 with an unidentified cartridge. The unit is quite heavy and in very good condition. The second is a Sony PS-11 in excellent condition. It's a very nice looking table with a great looking tonearm. The Sony included box, packing materials and original manual and warranty card. $20 for the two of them! I haven't spun any vinyl but both work and the pitch control on both shows them stable. A little dusty but not bad at all. I wanted a second table for the main rig so I can use a MM cart as well as the MC on the Pro-ject. Plus, I got a bunch of great vinyl for dirt cheap. Very pleased with today's finds.

Good grab. Set one of them up with a mono cartridge. There's tons of great mono vinyl out there.>

Setup and played both of them today. The Sony is the better looking table but the Technics beats it in sound quality. The Technics is about the equivilant of my Marantz 6200 which is a very nice sounding table. None of them quite reaches the level of the Pro-ject 6.9 but they do come close. A bonus, the cart that came on the Sony is actually a very good Sony cart with 10Hz to 30,000Hz frequency range and >25dB channel seperation. Not bad for $20.00.SDA-1C (full mods)

Nice score, Kelvin. Having any regrets selling that DL-160 now?
The Technics works really well with my Ortofon OM-30 and the Sony likes one of my new old stock Sony MC-10 moving coils but it would be cool to hear either with the Denon. Plus I still have the Clearaudio Aurum Beta. I'm going to try to find a stylus for the Sony cart that came with the Sony. It specs out really nice and was original equipment on it new. I have to say that on my Pro-ject I like the sound of the Sony MC-1 better than the Denon, but the Sony is a nude fine line with boron cantilever. It's also only .2 mV output. I have no idea why these never caught on like some other cartridges. Perhaps the Sony name held them back. Too bad because it is a seriously great sounding cartridge.SDA-1C (full mods)
